Title: Ordered Starburst Today
Post by: Moon57 on February 20, 2008, 10:36:17 PM
Well, got off the fence and ordered a Starburst this morning. My pap is 5 3/4 x 0, high track, speed about 16, tweener. Any suggested drillings? I want this to use as a strike ball when the lanes get fried. I drill my own stuff so some suggestions would really help. Thanks.

I drilled my Starburst RICO, and it is sweet on a medium THS (with dry outsides). I have not tried it on toast yet, but I expect the RICO drill to be a bit too much.

I have the Clear Diamond drilled with the pin on the PAP (axis), and that one is great on toast.

HAHA, you guys crack me up, what do you plan to use when plastic gets to be too much?  I get that the drilling might take you away from the comfort zone, but c'mon now, plastic is too much?  I'm sorry I'm in a goofy mood today, but that struck me as funny.  I might get one of these biznitches just to handle the dry part of the lane, its to the point that on the THS a target zone is easier to score with than a real ball.

I dont care how strong you drill it it still is not going to move much unkess your Robert Smith !

For discussion purpose, my clear had pretty much a pin on cg (might be a
1/4 off) and I drilled it in the middle of my grip, it goes straight as an arrow, and would not use it as a strike ball under most circumstnces. My Starburst I stacked and get a few more boards, but not that much, its still friggin plastic !

Do people really see conditions where they can use a plastic ball and score with it?  That is really sad.

In my entire life I never even had a thought of how to lay out any of my plastic spare balls...then again I would not pay $130 for a plastic ball, when I can get a Maxim for like $50 and it does the same thing.....GOES straight

I used my XXXL Wednesday night. I bowl on synthetic lanes and the pattern is 42-foot medium volume THS with dry boards outside the 8 board. I was able to stroke the XXXL straight up ten, and it would curl in ever so smooth. Miss right, and it bumps the dry without flipping and going high like resin. Miss left, and it will skate (leaving a ten pin). Get fast, and it will skate (leaving a ten pin). If I had made the three easy spares I whiffed, I would have shot 700.

The conditions are not dry. There are guys swinging the lane with Buzzbombs, Cells, Attitude Shifts, Total NVs and NVSs, BW Bites and Pearls, etc. With the puddle in the middle and dry on the outside, you can use absolutely anything you want. That said, I have been struggling with the wet/dry. I do not have the rev rate to create area on the wall like some of the power players. When I throw the plastic, it forces me to concentrate on speed and release.

Why spend $100+ on plastic? Until you've experienced the carry of the XXXL compared to a Maxim or a White Dot, I would not expect you to understand. Yes, plastic is plastic. The difference is having a legitimate core when using plastic as a strike ball. It DOES help with carry. For spares, it makes no difference at all.

I used a RICO layout on this XXXL. As long I keep my feet slow, the ball does hook. It actually picks up a roll and carries very well. The key is keeping the speed down, and staying behind the ball a bit. Lots of axis rotation will kill your carry if you throw plastic. I have decided to finish the season using only this ball (at this house).

This game has changed a ton since I took my 6 year layoff to go to college!  I'm seeing people who would not have scored any higher than a 170 average back then up around 195-205 now.  Its weird!

Easy boy.. they are not stupid, they choose to use that ball over an entry level resin, both are in the same ball park price wise and both will fill similar roles.  I am not too sure they aren't on to something.

I sub in a league on Thursdays from time to time, and the house apparently can't spare a drop of oil. Last week I used my Black Widow Clear the last game to shoot 240-something, and after league this past Thursday, I threw a practice game with the Black Widow Clear on the fresh breakdown pair and was playing 13 to 2 and back to the hole. I torqued a couple 9-pins and everything.

The lanes are ridiculously dry when the lights come on for practice, and once the lanes transition with 5 guys on a team, forget about it. A couple people on this forum will back me up when I say plastic is sometimes TOO MUCH at this joint.

I don't know where you are, but I have bowled in similar places, and yes I was forced to swing plastic... o my.  It has gotten to the point that I just send it as hard as I can and watch the resin stuff rip back and shred racks or leave horrible splits and give up.  Plastic is the best option in some areas.

I think the deal with the house I'm having so much trouble with is they want the open bowlers ( and there is alot of them ) that bowl after league to be able to hook the house balls. I'm wondering if this isn't the case with alot of houses.

Rico on plastic...I have now heard it all

novawagonmaster..what the hell are you doing with all those Lane #1 balls
you own?
What is it 25 or so?
And only average around 210 on THS
I would have invested in some coaching/lessons instead of wasting money on bowling balls that most overlap themselves.
What and no 300 with all those great Lane # 1 balls you have?
What a Joke!

Anybody paying that much for a plastic ball is totally

STUPID!!!!!!

Yes, I am stupid. I did not attend college.
It's not 25 or so...it's 43. So I am almost doubly stupid by your logic.
Yep, I average 210, 211, and 216 on a THS in 2 houses.
Not a single 300.
Lane #1 balls, Ebonite balls, Storm balls, Roto Grip balls. I've thrown them all. None have given me a 300. Oh...wait a second...do you think it could be that I do not throw any ball well enough to nab a 300? I know my limitations. I do not expect every ball that hits the 1-3 pocket to strike. I do not get miffed when I see a 10 pin standing there. I do not bowl because I feel I deserve honor scores. They should be earned. I have not earned it. Every ball comes with a 300 in it. It's up to the bowler to figure out how to get that prize inside. I suck. I tell my team members this on a regular basis. I know where I stand. I do not pretend to be something I am not.

Have I ever complained about the money I've spent on balls?
Nope.
Have I ever implied that I should have a 300 ring?
Nope.
Have I ever said Lane #1 balls are better than anything else (with the exception of the XXXL, which many bowlers outside the Lane #1 faithful will agree with)?
Nope.
Have I ever questioned your intelligence (or apparent lack therof)?
Nope.

Some people collect baseball cards, coins, or stamps. I collect Lane #1 balls. At least I can actively enjoy my collection. I drill my own equipment, so the investment per ball is still less than most other bowlers who are buying/drilling though a pro shop. I do not buy the balls because I think the new one will score any better than the last one. I buy them because I want to. I buy them because I can. I buy them because it pissses you off.

As for your last comment...anybody paying anything for any bowling ball must be stupid. The bowling centers provide balls to use for free. There is the joke you speak of.

Themezz, I respect many of the things you have said about wannabee proshops.

However, if a 2 piece core is desirable in a reactive resin ball, it can be an attribute in a plastic ball as well.  I had a Blue Dot before the XXXL and the XXXL reads the lane better and carries better.  Feel free to message Ron Clifton (magic carpet on this site, or use his email address listed on http://www.bowl4fun.com/, but give him some time to respond as he's getting ready to bowl Nationals) and ask him about me throwing the XXXL.  I'm probably a little rev dominant and often find myself in tweener hell on wet/dry house shots.  It's pretty common for me to use my XXXL for the third game.  I've used it for 2+ games a few times this year and I've joked about throwing it for the entire night.  I shot 680 with it after suffering through 3/4 of the first game with a B/G Centaur.  Instead of trying to get deeper than my optimum carry will allow, I'd rather play 12 to 5 or so with the XXXL.  Mine has the pin below the bridge about an inch, and the CG kicked maybe an inch to the right.  Pretty much straight over the label; the pin is probably 5" from my PAP, far from a strong drilling.  I get 2-3" of flare and plenty of hit.  I have no idea how much difference you'd see with different drilling's.

I use whatever will get the job done.  Read my profile and you'll see I'm not a Lane #1 homer.  I had two older Lane #1 balls that didn't do anything for me.  If it weren't for the kindness of another BR member, (JPRLane1) I probably wouldn't currently own any Buzzsaws.  I might not have my 800 (Tsunami), but I've been close with other equipment (Silver Streak Pearl, Nighthawk 2) and maybe would have one anyway.

Crankncrash, if I have to swing plastic too much, I'd rather get real deep with resin and take my chances with carry.  My Thursday night league is goofy.  Most times our lanes get used a good bit after they oil them, but lately we've had fresh.  The proprietor came by and I was joking with him about adding some oil so I wouldn't have to use plastic, and the guys with no hand or ability would stop having the world to shoot at.  I can't believe this, but he said that there was 90 units inside and 12 outside.  There should be a ton of hold and plenty of oil outside.  There is neither.  If I had to guess, there is around 40 inside and the bare minimum outside.  Unless he's using the cheapest oil on the planet, he's full of beans.  Anyway, the third game, I told him to watch me throw a shot with my XXXL.  Similar line to what I described earlier, and it hooked early and almost left a 7-9.  He said he'd look into it.  Now I wasn't whining; just wanted to make a point that you shouldn't have to swing plastic 2 games after a fresh shot is put out.

Strider, I'm with you, I will get deep and swing resin if i MUST, you really can't carry crap with plastic from a swing IMO.  But I have gotten caught off guard, not had anything else with me, and had to swing plastic b/c partical wouldn't get through the heads.  I bowled in a house that one week would be a freakin swamp, the next it was toast... well the prior year it was swamp or nothing so I started bringing heavy equipment and plastic only, then its a desert.. Needless to say I was done for.  SO, on a house shot i had to bring 5 balls to league, not knowing what I might get.  What a PITA!  O well, if I can talk my shop out of an xxxl at cost I will grab one and drill it to roll I guess, I didn't realize that the oil crisis was stiking bowling centers too.
