Pearl vs Polished....
« on: November 15, 2003, 08:09:08 PM »
Looking at a Silver Diamond vs a BlueBerry, both have Powercoil 18 coverstocks.

However Lane1 says the BlueBerry(and now Craneberry) is highly polished while the Silver Diamond is a Pearlized finish.

What is the differnce exactly between highly polished vs. pearlised?

How will they roll differently?

I know how to polish a coverstock, how do you pearlize it?

The Silver Diamond, Blueberry, and Cranberry all have different cores.  The Pearl Powercoil 18 coverstock will give you slightly more length than a polished solid Powercoil 18 coverstock.  The Silver Diamond will provide more of a skid/snap reaction and the Blueberry will have more midlane reaction with an arcing backend.  You cannot pearlize a solid reactive coverstock, but you can put a high polish on a solid reactive coverstock with a ball spinner to provide a similar reaction to a pearl.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up

A couple more questions.

Is a pearl coverstock as adjustable as a solid stock. Everybody raves about the BlueB/CranB and how easliy adjusted they are. Would polishing or sanding the Silvar Diamond give simlar resluts?

Personally I do not like to sand a pearlized coverstock.  I prefer to sand/polish a solid coverstock as it is generally easier to adjust.

In general, you can sand a pearlized cover and it will yield equivalent but not identical results. That is, the sanded one will grab eariler and more smoothly. A sanded pearl will never be identical to the solid, even if they have the same core, but in certain cases, depending on the bowler, they can be close enough so there is little practical difference. Try it on a ball and see if you like it; on most ball, they can be restored if you don;t like it.

As a point of general information, many multi-colored balls of late release are actually a combination of solid and pearl. Some examples are the Dyno-Thane Thing and Element, Brunnswick SmashR, and Hammer Turbo Diesel. So if you polish these up (as balls like the Element, SmashR and Turbo Diesel all come dull or matte finish), you will have balls that are seen to be pearl+solid combos. Polished they will seem to skid a little more than a polished solid would skid.
