supernova has me baffled
« on: November 24, 2007, 03:30:19 AM »
alright guys. i recently got a 15lb supernova drilled up. i'm a righty, it's drilled pin up and right of my ring finger, cg a bit above my midline and kicked out past the pin, and the MB swung out from the thumb past the CG. when i recieved it, it was dull, as the ball came in a trade. so i threw it, and the big backend people have been talking about was nonexistent. it refused to be swung, it only would play up the boards. a tight line was playable, but it could not open up anything. so i had it polished back up yesterday, and that killed it even more. i can't even play 15 to 10. what the flying heck is wrong? it's not me, i can move anything else i own just fine. someone please help, i need this ball to work.

EDIT- in response to rockbowler's post, i normally bowl in a house with lots of head oil and out of bounds at about 6, unless you're up the boards or have manly hand. an up the boards shot can be anywhere from 10 to 4 for me.

it may be drilled too strong, and you may be over-turning it- killing the reaction. or the layout may not match up well to your pin-to-pap.

i have a storm trauma er that's drilled similar to your supernova. the more hand i put in it, the less it hooks. the layout just doesn't match up with an aggresive rev-rate.

you might look into plugging it and trying something else. it may get kinda expensive after a while, but what kind of price can you put on good practice?

It probably is you, but not in a bad way.  You probably just don't match up well with the ball.  I had the exact same problem with the Solid Uranium.  I could definitely strike with it, but no matter how it was prepped it just didn't cover many boards.  Sold that bugger.

I had the same problem with the Solid Uranium. There were rumors that the Ultimate Inferno has the same coverstock as the Solid Uranium but I got a lot of movement with the Ultimate Inferno that I did not get with the Solid. It was a big disappointment since I have a Pearl Uranium that I love.

I also have the Supernova and as leftyinhawaii said, it could be a matchup problem. However, you did not include the lane conditions in your post and so we have no idea about the lane pattern that you encountered.

As for me, my Supernova came polished and when I threw it on wooden lanes (THS - 38 ft., 7 to 7, medium oil in the heads) it was a monster when I was swinging 12 to 7. I had unbelievable trip 4's that showed me how powerful the ball is. When I used it in a house with synthetic lanes (same polished OOB condition) known for heavy oil in the heads, it would go over and under. I can tweak the surface but I love the reaction in my first house so I just let it be and used another ball.

BTW, my drilling is similar to yours.

There was a time about 4 1/2 years ago that I too had a problem similar to yours with several Lane 1 balls. They were drilled in the area of pin beside RF or above and beside RF or over RF and in those areas. I also sanded them, polished them, and etc. to no avail. I decided that I didn't match up to those balls and sold them. A year ago after talking to others, it was felt they were drilled wrong for my style, so I purchased an Enriched Uranium and Solid Cobalt Bomb from triggerman. He and Chuck felt I should use under RF, under Bridge, etc. such drillings and CG out. I drilled one with the pin under RF and cg out and the other with the pin almost under bridge and CG out and "Bingo", Lane 1 balls became the first balls out of my bag.

To sum it up, I would suggest you discuss your problem with triggerman and Chuck and probably redrill your ball.

after seeing roughly 12-15 supernovas drilled up and reactions people were getting, for the general public (tweener style people) pin unders with mb in the 50-55 degree area makes this ball a monster (roughly a 4 to 4.5" pin to pap x 55*) if the ball appears to be not making a move I would first assume burn up.  the longer pin to pap will help some with this, and if still struggling I would suggest a light polish to the ball.  for a heavier handed more rev dominate player, pin overs seem to be pretty good, as your revs will dominate the ball, mine is drilled pin over middle finger, cg right in my grip center with mb just right of thumb, great ball on the fresh and does a bang up job opening the lanes up.  but I am considering a second one drilled pin under or pin in ring with mb at 50* to really compliment my Xp drilled the same way

Mine is a stacked drill. Pin is in a 1:00 position in relation to the ring finger (3.5" from PAP) and CG/MB directly below. All I can say  is this thing is a midlane monster and it just keeps on churning when it makes the corner. I simply do not have flat hits with this ball (unless throwing on a light condition that would be totally wrong for the ball anyway). This is the only thing I can think of in relation to your problem. The ball may just be spent half way down the lane!
