Pro Purple & Heavier Oil
« on: January 02, 2004, 07:54:13 AM »
Hi Buzzbrains !

I'm thinking of toting along my Pro Purple with me tomorrow to my mixed FLOOD, I mean league !

Was wondering if it would work OK.  It's at 800-1000 smooth and drilled 3x5. CG below the midline,......4 1/2 pin out ball.   With my track now in a "normal" or "more normal" position, I was wondering if this ball would be feasible to use.

I've thrown it on a fresh medium heavy house shot with screaming backends before and she just rolls like a snowball down a mountain!  Therefore, with the right line, couldn't this be used on heavy because of it's roll characteristics? And, even though there isn't much backend at all at this house it may just tip enough to carry....yes ?

Thoughts ..............thanks

what's 800- 1000 smooth mean, for a Pro Purple?

if you took 800-1000 nylon pad or sandpaper, you changed the resin base's grit but not the particle's finish.

The Pro Purple can be used for heavy oil, IF you have more than medium revs. I have used it for such. That is not its forte, but it is very usable there.

For me, I can use my Pro purple on oil.  It really gets into an early roll and it is nice and continous in the backs.  Mine is a smooth surface as well. I used the orange trizact pad.  I have used the cerium oxide(white) on it and it will definately squirt more with that surface.

Jeff, I would try it. Just play a little straighter and keep it in play.  Mine is drilled like 2x5 and it is early and smooth.

Hope this helps

King,

I always and only used Trizact on mine. Mostly the white cerium oxide which gave it a shine; it is supposed ot be about 2500 grit. I experiment once with the Orange, the next step down. I am not sure which is about 1000 grit. This made mine better able to handle heavy oil. This is why I was suspicious when Jeff said 800 grit. Lane#1 told me the finish was the cerium oxide pad with the slightest of hazing with a white pad.

I know from my experiments that sandpaper and polish do not makes anywhere near the changes to this cover that Trizact does. This is why I stated what I did. I am 100% sure about this ball (and the Riot Zone, which I am convinced, again 100%, is the same cover.)

KOTM is right,....that's what he did, I couldn't remember the finish though. There is a tiny shine/sheen to it, so that makes sense.  Thanks for chiming in King, I forgot ....

Charlest, not sure if he used a trizact, but.......

I'll give it a whirl during practice tonight.

Remember, I have a Silver w/ strong pin and a thumb level cg that really rolls.  I scuffed that with Liquid Sandpaper last night just for giggles and I'll throw that on this condition too.  Can't hurt, you never know,...the SD scuffed w/ LS and the roll characteristics on this thing combined w/ the PK18..
....who knows

I'll report back tonight or tomorrow.......I've been sucking in this house lately....it's just a mixed league, but it's still frustrating....this is the place that oils HEAVY in the heads, 42 ft. down, and doesn't strip the backend 1/2 the time....does the word "VALEDEZ" mean anything...

Thanks for the advice guys !! Anyone else ??

Jeff, you can try it. Buzzsaw's are the best balls for oil, due to their diamond core. But, a 1:30 drilling is not the optimum drilling for heavy oil, in my opinion. Yes, you do have the CG in the thumb quadrant, so that will help some. Hey, give it a try, what do you have to lose..? =:^D

T-GOD, exactly!  I have a 1:30 on it so I can use it on a variety of conditions, heavier wasn't the last thing on my mind, but because it rolls so nice I thought.....hey........give it a whirl....we'll see

Jeff, I really can't see the Pro Purple as a heavy oil ball, unless one of two things is true:

1) Your ball speed is comparable to that of a small child; or

2) Your definition of heavy oil is 40 units in the middle, run to no more than 40 feet.

Like you, I really like the roll of the PP, but it would not be my first choice for heavy oil.  Actually, it wouldn't be my second choice either...

If you want to give it a shot, though, I'd scuff it up pretty good, and make sure you stay behind it and roll the damn ball! (as I'm always telling a teammate of mine, who has very high ball speed)

Good luck!  Let us know how it worked out.

seadrive,

I agree 100%. It wouldn't be my second choice either. I just tossed it out there because of the roll characteristic in this core. Scuffing my Hercules would be a better bet, but it's dailed in right now at my mens league house and I'd like to keep her right there .  Not sure if I want to scuff the PP either because like I said in the response to TGOD, I wanted this ball for control on a bunch of conditions, and heavy wasn't on my mind.

Like I said before though, I DID scuff my Silver pretty good...this has a strong drill on it with the cg LOW next to my thumb with an axis hole in the thumb quadrant.  This may also be an opportunity.

I'm going to throw these 2 balls first during practice tonight (we have 15 minutes timed by the auto scorer) so I'll have plenty of time to throw a few shots with all the stuff I want.

Jeff,

My Pro Purple handled heavy oil fairly well when "scuffed" with the Orange colored Trizact pad. If you scuff it with the blue or the green which go down much further (around 400 and 600 or thereabouts), it should handle more oil in a better way.

I have to believe, scratch that, ... I know that Trizact is THE proper way to change the surface of this ball.

It worked OK....still had the best read and reaction with the Fuel at about 600 matte.  The Silver Diamond worked OK all scuffed up (remember,...4.5 inch pin, cg by the thumb w/ a thumb quadrant hole) ...so it rolled nice...but pinged the hell out of the 10s!!!

Used the Fuel tonight.  Decent night.....

The new track (lowered) has helped this house tremendously, because now the ball is rolling better and reading the pattern much better.  Not more revs, but more overall hook because of the rotation of the ball....don't have to struggle to get it to the pocket anymore.....he may have wiped down the backends though, I'm not sure, but still, better overall reaction by far....

thanks all.........
