I tend to agree, but it all depends on what you're bowling. If it is just leagues, with no money, then ya not worth it. If it is a league where one high game pays out more than your ball cost, why not? I mean I wouldn't pay that much for a ball, but who's to say what is or isn't too much?

Just because someone is WILLING to pay a certain price for something, doesn't mean it's WORTH that amount. It just means you found yourself a buyer dumb enough to pay what you're asking. Nothing against the person selling it for that price at all, if they can get $300 for a ball, more power to them, I still stick by the statement that no bowling ball is worth $300 or more. I hope cjbenavides fins what he's looking for, and at a reasonable price.

Do you Golf??
Why do people pay $400+ for a driver that they don't even use on every hole?
Any item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Plain and simple.
I have sold dozens of rare gem balls for over $300 a piece. I got $750 for my last 15 lb. Pink Raspberry and $600 for the one before that.
It is usually people that can't afford luxury items that say they are not worth it. If you have $10 million and you want something bad enough that isn't easily accessable and you pay $1500 for something that originally sold for $250. Then that is what it is worth to that person.
Why leave money on the table? If someone is willing to pay for something at a higher price then you make more money correct?? If it doesn't sell you lower the price..

Buddy...I have more luxury items than you could imagine, so that has nothing to do with it at all. I have more disposable income than most, but I still wouldn't pay over $300 for any bowling ball, it's just a waste of money. I am saying if you are willing to pay more than $300 for a bowling ball (especially a ten year old Lane #1 ball), you need to get your head examined, period. Nothing against the seller, if you can get $1,000 for a bowling ball, the more power to you, I have no problem with that. But WANT and WORTH are two different things, which is a concept lost on you apparently, which is the point I was trying to make in my previous post. Geesh, get over it.
Sorry if I don't bow down the the mantle of ancient buzzsaws and think they're all worth $12,000 NIB apiece, to me they're just old bowling balls worth no more than they were when they were released. Maybe they should have MAP pricing on those to ensure people aren't getting screwed.

I know bowlers who have paid over 500 bucks then won sweepers for 10k, so cost is irrelevant if you are that good and know how to use the weapon the correct way.
You can easily get 500 for a 15 lb perfect spec Tour Power and that ball was a Power Line mid priced ball when it first came out.

Why would a carpenter spend $100 for a hammer when you can get a hammer at the dollar store for $1.00??
It is the same tool.
If somebody pays $100 for something. How that not what the ball is worth???
If you tell me something is worth $500 but I can only sell it for $100 then it is worth $100.

Exactly, thanks for making my point for me. Personal worth is not the same as the actual worth of the item.
Let me give you an example. Let's say I have a dime where the head was double-stamped. Such error coins are extremely rare because the mint catches most screw ups before they enter circulation, but it's impossible to catch them all. And because double-stamped coins are so rare, collectors are willing to shell out a bunch of money for them.
Let's say a numismatist contacts me and offers me $2,500 for this dime (depending on various factors, this offer wouldn't be unheard of). Does that mean I can now take my dime, go to Best Buy, and purchase a 50-inch flat screen TV with it? Ummm, no. The dime is still worth ten cents. Just because some dude that collects rare coins thinks it's worth $2,500 doesn't mean that's the worth of the item. It's still worth all of ten cents.

Sorry. Having trouble understanding an item is not worth what someone will pay for it.
I am also a baseball card collector and had a card shop for a while. The price book reads that a card is "Worth" $100. I can't sell it for $100. I can only sell it for $25. THAT MAKES IT WORTH $25!!! Plain and simple. Or is it worth the .02 it took to make it??
Any product in this world is only worth what somebody will pay for it. What is so hard to comprehend about that?? What dictates worth?? What someone will pay for it.

WORTH: the value of something measured by its qualities or by the esteem in which it is held.
Don't get me wrong, i loved the raspberry c2, (one of my all time favorites) but i would not pay close to that for another one. There are too many other far less expensive, better made, equal performing choices out here. But if i could buy one and flip it for substantial profit i would consider it. I don't fault the seller for that. It's just ironic that the same seller has posted complaints on this board about online sales screwing pro shop profit. You can't have it both ways. There is another market of buyers as well who are alot less loose with their hard earned cash. They deserve the same value for the dollar that you have.

If my town tells me my house is worth 200,000 I am going to pay taxes on a house worth 200,000, even it it's worth more to me. I am not going to go up to my city clerk and say, well the house is worth 500,000 to SOME people, so I think I want to pay taxes on a 500,000 house, no matter what you guys tell me it's worth. The 200,000 is REAL worth, not PERCEIVED worth, two different things altogether.
Everything has a real and perceived worth. The real worth of something can be measured (well, by most of us, anyway) and the perceived worth can be paid by morons who think any Lane #1 ball made before 2000 should cost you one of your kidneys. I'm done arguing this, go ahead and pay $600 for a ball, and then I can watch you have a complete meltdown when it gets jammed out back and comes back like you resurfaced it with a pick axe.

I certainly agree and stand behind the companies and website distributors screw the pro shop comments I have made. They are about current line product that is sold cheaper online than Pro Shops can but them for.
We are not talking about discontinued vintage balls that are limited.
It is two seperate cases.

You have no argument. What is value judged by?? Money!
The value of anything is determined by what somebody will pay for it.
Just because you do not find the same value in a product that someone else does does not make it less valuable as a whole.
I personally don't think that 80% of bowling balls on the market right now are worth what they are selling for.
How can a distributor sell me a Black Widow Venom for $110 wholesale. Then send me sales about Venom x-outs for $65 and they even state in the flyer that there is nothing wrong with the ball.
Why is the same exact ball priced different? They are "Worth" the same. They took the same amount of money to produce.. Why is the Venom X-Out not worth $110 and vise versa??
If value is "ALWAYS" judged my a monetary number. It is only worth the number you can sell it for.

It's the exact same reason as the BW example he stated. One is $399 because people are willing to pay more for #15. Just like people are willing to pay more for a bowling ball that isn't an x-out or blem. I think you misread or misunderstood what Beans was talking about with the BW's.

kidjete, the point he was making (I think) was that he felt they (Widows) should be the EXACT same price, since they cost the same amount to make, whether they were x-outs or not, and they should be "worth" the same amount. If you follow that logic, then he should be selling his two raspberry saws for the same price, since they cost the same amount to make, regardless of 15 or 16lb. That is how I took it. Like I said before, get what you can for something. If Beans can get $399 for one, more power to him, I have no problem with that, they're his after all. It still doesn't make the ball "worth" $399, it means there's a sucker who is willing to pay $399 for one. Completely different concepts, really.

It still doesn't make the ball "worth" $399, it means there's a sucker who is willing to pay $399 for one. Completely different concepts, really.

I am trying to comprehend what your logic is.
Mine is simple and I stated it before. The value of any item is only as high as someone will pay for it. Plain and simple. What is so hard to see about that.
Fine,
You don't think the ball is worth it. Don't buy it. Someone else might. I know one thing. I won't sell it for less so that is what it is worth to me.
When you publish your "This is what the MAINE MAN thinks its worth" book.
LMK I won't pay more than $1.00 for it...LOL!!

cjbenavides, I hope you find what you are looking for at a REASONABLE price.
As far as the worth argument goes, here's my final word on the subject:
Don't argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

From what I have read you started the arguement. Now you're calling people idiots because they don't agree with you. That seems a bit hypocritcal to me.

kidjete, it's not hypocritical at all. I did not start the argument, I was personally attacked after giving my opinion on the subject, which started the argument. I was stating my opinion about worth when I was attacked by Beans, so I feel I have a right to defend myself, as you would as well I assume. I have given my reasons about the differences in the worth of an object, which others care not to agree with, and that's fine, I am dropping the issue. Take care, and bowl well!

Just seemed to me you were forcing your opinion down their throats a little more than they were. I don't see anywhere in the post where you got attacked. You started the whole mess by bashing the price Beans asked then got your panties in a bunch when he attempted to explain himself. Oh well it's not my concern I can just see where Beans is coming from.

That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. Beans basically told me the reason I think old buzzsaws are overpriced is because I could not afford them (which made me chuckle if he knew how much I make). You can go back and look it up on page one, it's there, and before I had started arguing with anyone. Oh well, it's a dead horse now, time to stop beating it....

I really like this real-world application of the definition of "worth" in a business sense that I found on this website (http://"http://www.gun-appraisals.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=wiw2u.templates&templates_ID=45") through a Google search:
quote:
How much is something worth? This is a common question that both buyers and sellers have been haggling over for centuries. Worth, simply defined, is what someone is willing to give for something. Worth cannot be confused with an asking price, selling price, or buying price. Worth, put in plain terms, is a relative term applied to both an item or items and individuals involved in a particular transaction.
How many times have you heard somebody say, this "whatsit worth $5,000-so-and-so told me it was"! Being told something is worth a specific value is meaningless if the person doing the appraisal has no knowledge of the item itself or the market for it. Not even an auction is an indicator of true "worth," since many existing factors can alter a price many times over. I recall being at an auction in which a common pocket watch, easily purchased in many places for about $40, sold for over $3,000.00! Was that a true indicator of real worth, or simply an example of emotional siblings wanting the same heirloom from their family-with the purchase price merely being deducted from their inheritance proceeds! I doubt there was one more person on this planet that would have paid that much for the item-yet it was worth $3,000.00 to somebody. Unfortunately, when events such as that occur, others with similar goods mistakenly assume that they, too, can sell their similar goods for similar prices-and that is about as big of a mistake as is possible in the collectible business.
Real worth, from a professional appraisal perspective, is what you can assume you can get for an item under normal circumstances, based on the existing market demand and condition of the item itself. Historical association will add a certain premium to a targeted market as well, but sentimental value is basically meaningless, unless you are the prospective buyer.

I am sorry I called you an idiot, that was out of line, and I shouldn't have resorted to a personal attack. Again, I am sorry about that remark.

Beans posesses a great deal of Saw knowledge and has access to Lane 1 balls.
A smart business man will use those things to his advantage.
He did not create the mystique and super loyal following that surrounds this company. He just uses it to his advantage.
The Lane 1 loyals wear their love on their sleeve for all to see.
Many seem to find Lane 1 ball ownership as a badge and post all their gear in their signature as proof of membership.
A rare ball such as the Raspberry would be seen as another jewel on the necklace of membership. I'm not sure it even matters how good the ball really is.
It seems to be enough just to be able to say you own/throw one.
This does not make sense to me or many other bowlers but it makes sense to them.
And that's all that matters.
Supply and demand.
They demand and Beans supplies.
The fact it cost more is part of the appeal.
Just good business.

Maine Man,
If I took everything that is written about me and towards me the wrong way I would never survive in this business. No offense taken. I do like to throw a jab or two myself to keep the pot stirring so I am guilty as well. The "can't afford" comment was a general statement and not directed at you at all.
Now leave me alone so I can sell this ball for $400.. LOL!!
Good day and happy holidays!!

Beans,
Is the Raspberry core the same as the Carbide/C? I thought it was, but I wasn't sure. If so, that was the best Lane #1 ball I ever threw, I shot 4 300's with that one! Let me know, thanks.

The Carbide/C has a similar looking core.
The difference was the inner nuggets were seperated and the Raspberry C2 core had the inner nuggets together creating a lower RG core.

Basically, the same core as the Carbide LRG then, another good ball.
