I saw this first hand tonight when we were knocking out a switch grip outer sleeve.  This is a single drill ball and has never been plugged.  I'm fairly certain it is not the core either.  When you tap on it, it sounds hollow.  Anyone seen anything like this?

Lane 1 didn't know what it was either, but we are mailing it to them and they are sending us a new ball.
