Retro THS for dry conditions
« on: February 04, 2010, 04:42:21 AM »
I have a THS and I'm thinking about using it on burnt lanes. My THS is drilled pin above+middle of bridge, CG directly below Pin. So a fairly weak/smooth drill.

I was wondering if a healthy layer of secret sauce on the THS will make it dry-lane worthy. I really like how the THS never over reacts, so that's my reason for possibly turning it into a dry lane ball.

Any suggestions? TIA

What's that old saying..

Drill weak balls strong and strong ball weak?

I'm starting to believe it..

A strong ball drilled strong will roll out in anything less than the condition it was meant for.

A weak ball drilled weaker will not perform on the conditions it meant for. It will just keep skidding in all except for the driest of lane conditions

Smooth out the surface and it will work just fine.  My THS is extremely versatile.

I disagree. I bought a THS when it was first released, being under the impression that it would be similar to the original from the 90's. IMO it's stronger than advertised, even with the almost negative drilling (5 3/4 pin-pap) I used.

I have more revs than most, though, so maybe it was just a bad match for me, but I couldn't make it a dart no matter how hard I tried. Never could use that thing on lighter stuff.

I drilled one of these, and it's really stupid weak.  So I would imagine if you put a good abralon sanding to 4000, and then apply a polish with a slip agent.  You could make a dart out of it.

Listen Murphsquatch, we all know you won the BBE monthly raffle and picked a THS.  Yet again, you aren't fooling anyone flaptastic.

Well you would be the only one so far on this thread so maybe it is the bowler. Maybe you should consider working on weaker hand positions if a THS is sometimes too much ball.

Mine is at 2000 abralon and is very smooth and controllable with a pin high stacked layout. With a weaker layout and a higher surface it should be wonderful on dry lanes.

Whatever they marketed it as, the cover is a SuperFlex variant so plan accordingly. The times I've seen it thrown it's been pretty weak, but since it's going to roll due to the core design it would seem most at home when you needed to control the backends on a lighter-volume sport shot. Sort of similar to a pin-axis-friendly condition.

Don't assume that I don't know how to use weaker (read: MUCH weaker) because I do. I'm the only one in this thread who didn't like the THS, so what? That makes me a bad bowler? I wasn't aware that the criteria for being a good bowler was liking every ball I've ever drilled.

I liked the original Teal Buzzsaw in the 90's, which if I remember right was a pearl. The THS uses a solid bleeder coverstock, which I simply wasn't a fan of. With the layout and surface I used (roughly 2000 polished) it responded to friction down lane more than I wanted. I also hated it OOB. It just wasn't what I was looking for. Not once did I say it was a bad ball, just that I didn't like what I saw from it.

The OP asked for opinions. Mine is that I wouldn't recommend it for burnt lanes because no matter what I tried I couldn't make it work on anything under mediums, which isn't what I wanted.

Dude....I didn't say you were a BAD bowler....just said if you are getting THAT much reaction from a THS that you might want to work on weaker/straighter game. It could be the patterns your playing making the THS move this much but point is that if it is too much then weaker hand positions would be the obvious answer to me.

Cause this is a mild ball at best but most (as in this thread) would consider it weak.

I agree, for most people it was a mild ball. For me, the response off friction was sharper than I wanted. I used it on multiple conditions and never liked it. I sold it locally after about 30 games.

Maple lanes has multiple conditions?

Lower RG rolly balls are generally not good on "burnt" conditions even if they have polish unless you are low in the rev department. If you want to try, I would use something like this:

Might be better off in getting something in the RG 2.60 range like a Gemstone.

The original Teal Buzzsaw was a solid resin sanded to 320 grit. I think the first pearl Buzzsaw was the XL. The THS coverstock is very tuneable, so adjust it to your liking for best results. =:^D

My THS is still money for me when they get choppy.. I can still move left of most and get it to recover with my tilt..

I would like to find another 14 lb. that I would trade NIB for NIB for..
