Magic vs Rogue Cell vs Dynamo
« on: March 30, 2009, 01:48:27 AM »
Alright folks, I have had time to test each one of these, and I will break down the results of each one and summarize my findings. I hope this will help all the bowlers out there looking at one of these 3!

My stats: Medium rev, medium to higher speed player usually play down and in on heavier shots and move inside as the lanes break down to chase the oil. I used all of these at 3 different houses. 2 sythentic, 1 wood just to see what they can do.

Rogue Cell: Surface was brought down to 2000 to on each ball to start to make the tests even. And then adjusted from there. The rogue was drilled with the continuation drilling off the brochure, which put the pin right next to the ring finger. I was expecting this ball hook alot, but at the same time store enough energy to kick the 10 pin. I bowled a few shots with the rogue to break in the cover before adjusting it to 2000. At 2000 I must say I could not get a consistent read with the rogue at all. It was the most release sensitive ball of the 3. If I missed it at the bottom, it did nothing at all, nearly go straight. With that said, once I got my kinks out, and actually put some mustard on the ball, this thing would just murder the rack. This drilling gave me nice length, and a very predictable turn down lane. For a fresh shot heavier oil shot, This ball will not be my first out, it just went to long for me. While I can move out to accomodate and play straigher, there are just better options on the fresh for me.

Lane 1 Dynamo: Exact same drilling as the rogue cell, with larger weight hole to add more flare. Used this ball at 4000, 2000, 1000, then back to 2000 to do this comparison. This ball was a decent ball for heavy oil, but it was nearly identical to the magic. It would go long, then snap on the backend. I could always find the pocket with the Dynamo, even on a fresher shot, but carry was iffy for me. I left more solid 8 pins with this ball then I did with either of the others. My best carry at the 3 houses I tested these was on the wood lanes when I hit light, and even then it had some odd leaves. As a result the Dynamo as been removed from my bag and sold, just do not have a place in my bag for it at this point.

Ebonite Magic: The ebonite magic is drilled 4x4, pin under ring, with a large weight hold on the midline. The magic now has 150 games on it, as the two other competitors were brand new (dynamo 3 games on it). The magic at 2000 is still the best rolling ball of the 3. The magic is designed out of box to go long and snap on the backend, giving a motion very similar to the dynamo. What I found was that the continuation through the rack was what set these pieces aside. The magic would carry from anywhere, even when I was supposed to leave half the rack (not even hitting the head pin), it would somehow throw pins around and carry. Botched releases still made its way to the pocket and carried the 10 pin. As a result the Magic is the first ball out of the bag on the heavy stuff.

Summary:
Heavy Oil- If you are bowling on heavy oil, and I mean true heavy oil, I would recommend the Magic or the Dynamo as a distant second. With the right surface and correct drilling, either of these could be made to work on a fresh shot. The Magic was the better hitting ball of the two. The Dynamo's carry was iffy at best, which was just the complete opposite of what I am seeing from others with it. My agent orange carries worlds better then the Dynamo. I tried more shots and release changes to make the Dynamo carry, and I just could not consistently strike with the Dynamo, it was just and ok Ball in my hands.

Medium Oiler- The Rogue has earned a spot in my bag permanently. I hated it at first, until I started putting a little bit of extra mustard on it, and it would carry the world.. second to only the magic. I have took the surface of the Rogue back up to 4000 to better set the balls apart. So on something heavy I bring out the Magic at 2000. As soon as the magic goes high I bring out the Rogue. The Rogue, being a hybrid, fits right between my Magic and AO with polish on it. If anybody is looking for a good 1-2 punch, don't hesistate to look into the Magic and Rogue.

Roto Grip apologies: For the life of me, I could not get results with the cell line. I had 2 different cells,a brand new cell pearl, and I could not get them to do anyting for me but leave 10 pins. No matter what, I would strike then 10 pin and repeat that for 3 games. Now with the Rogue, I have to give the Roto/Storm guys kudos, this is one excellent ball. So let me take a second to eat a lil crow....... ok thats enough. If anyone has any questions regarding my results, feel free to pm me. I don't work for any of these companies, nor am I on any staff. I am just a crazed fan of the sport, that bowls 30+ games a week, and tests out all the latest equipment.

Thank you!

Travis

Tizzle,

I read this post and had to ask,  "if you were leaving a lot of 8 pins with the Dynamo, was the ball driving too hard?" I would think that if you left a lot of 8 pins, the  ball was crushing the pocket maybe too hard.  Maybe not usuable on the lanes you were bowling on because the back end reaction was too strong.  That is more of a question, not making an opinion because I don't know how the Dynamo was hitting the pocket.

I have not thrown the Magic but I have seen it thrown and the ball does carry very well.

I love my magic I drilled it weak but this ball reacts very well on all conditions I throw on

Tizzle, layouts that give you the most backend, aren't always good for overall carry, or give the most backend on certain conditions of for certain types of roll. They tend to give you over/under. Plus, a layout designed to flare alot, then adding a hole to increase the flare may not be the best decision either.

This is what you've done. You have a low RG ball, which rolls early, flares a good amount on it's own, then layed it out for max flare, plus an larger hole to increase the flare sounds like overkill to me.

Maybe a more tame layout, pin closer to your centerline would give you better carry and better backend, meaning at the right point down the lane and not too early.

Just my observation. =:^D

T-God,

The hole was increased to make the ball hook, without it I got nothing out of the ball. It was an medium oil at best before the weight hole was adjusted to add more flare.

Nicanor:
I thought the same thing, but of course I moved and changed my shot to adjust to that, even light hits left 8 pins. Even a 4 pin here and there, I just could not get it to carry consistently.

Tizz, i think a weaker layout would increase the strength of the ball, if you can imagine that. It does work. =:^D
