I just started re-using Lane #1 equipment. I have been primarily using Visionary balls for the last few years. When I first tried Lane #1 about 3 or 4 yrs ago, I thought the balls were terrible, they hit like a marshmellow. I was using a Pink Raspberry and a Teal at that time. I kept reading how great Lane #1 was here at this site so I decided to redrill them and still had bad results with them so I put them away and started using Visionary.
About a month ago, I read something that APK wrote about how he had bad results with his Lane #1's until he tried a CG out drilling, so I contacted him and decided to try it out a 5x3 on the Pink Raspberry. In the meantime I had purchased a used Pearl Cherry C2 and had it redrilled to fit me, but with a crack running through the pin, I had that one drilled up with the pin in the PAP to keep the crack away from the fingers.
My initial impression was that with the new drilling on the PInk, it was a much stronger ball than previously, but it seemed to have about the same hit and carry as the Visionarys. I like it much better now and have been trying to use it as much as possible just to see if it is as good as I have heard. It did seem like I was leaving fewer tenpins than with my Visionary balls but the sound and hit seemed about the same so I decided to go back about a couple of weeks and compare the two companies balls. Here is what I have recorded since I got the Pink Raspberry redrilled 5x3:
Company Total Frames Strikes Strike % 10 Pins 10 Pin %
Lane #1 113 51 45.1 % 12 10.6 %
Visionary 83 47 56.6 % 10 12 %
Really not much difference and much too early to tell since I have only been using Lane #1 for a couple of weeks. The different balls give a different look or way to play the lanes so to me, it seems to be more dependant on whether I am having a good day and on how the ball's surface, core, and drilling match up to the lane conditions. Note: the above stats include both typical house shot and sports league conditions.
