Silver Diamond-Notice
« on: January 04, 2004, 04:09:25 PM »
I'm not ready to review the SD at length yet, but have quite a bit more games on it at this point.  On Saturday, I used it a bit on my mixed league shot which is heavily headed, 42 ft. down, and usually not much backend, depends on if he strips or not.  Well, this week he did, thank God, and the shot was pretty decent.

I dulled the SD a bit and gave it a shot.  This is the 3rd house I've thrown this ball , and all have had different conditions, and even though I don't have a ton of games on it, I have seen one recurring situation. Major ringing 10 pins!

Now, I'm not saying it could be operator error because God only knows how much I suck,....but, 3 different houses, different conditions, different lines, and numerous ringing 10's.

Anyone else ?

Don't get all worked up Buzzheads, I'm just pointing out something I noticed. I'm not saying the ball sucks, because I like the read and reaction I get, however,...I have noticed the ringing 10's.............

Jeff,

I had a silver diamond as well.  I had the same problem with it.  If there was a decent amount of carrydown in the mids at all, Ping.  I tried to change wrist positions, and change angles.  I kept on pinging. I have seen this with my cherry pearl as well, but the cherry pearl rolls so great that I kept it and use it only when I see the need for it.

In fact, I am preparing for our local masters tournament, and I took all my equipment, so that I can get board adjustment comparisons on them.  The cherry rolls so good.  I do not remember the differences in the cherry pearl and the silver.  I will have to check.

Cherry pearl has double mini diamonds and flares more!  = less length if drilled the same.

My feeling sort of parallels that of Lucky Lefty's.

The SD, like the Cranberry, gets exceptional length due to the nature of its core, when used on oil patterns that are heavier than the ball, drilling and the bowler's delivery can handle. This results in a larger backend that is harder to control for your average release; it is too easy to come in "behind" the head pin, leaving ringing 10 pins. Higher speeds or higher tracks  or drier midlanes can ameliorate this effect. This coverstock, PK 18, is very flippy by nature; it seems to do better with a lower RG and/or higher flaring (great RG differential) cores. This is not writtten in stone, of course, and this is just what I seem to see in such bowling ball cover/core combinations.

the reason this ball was used is 2 fold:
1. large pin out, my cg is next to my thumb, pin next to ring, thumb quadrant axis hole.
2. I dulled the ball to 800 matte.

This is not your typical Silver Daimond (except for the cover prep) this ball wants to roll, and I wouldn't say it has exceptional length, I would assume it's the drill and the pin out.

With the was the ball rolls, I figured, if I a scuff it a bit, it MAY be able to handle this shot.

It did / could handle the shot, and wasn't coming in behind the head pin,....
conditions weren't conducive to that "look" on the lane.

Also, keeping in mind, I've used this ball on other shots, other lines, different houses and still ping 10's quite a bit........

So far i love my Silver Diamond, It has a great reaction in oil and great reaction when they dry up a little. I have been able to grip it and rip it
crossing 20 out and have had no problem with it making its way back. Or i could take some hand out of it and play 15 to 10 and kill the pocket. what i don't under stand is that my SD is out hooking my Cherry Bomb by a mile. I don't know what happened to my cherry bomb but it has become dead. Well not really dead but it goes way to far before it turns over.

Jeff,

With an 800 matte, there is always the alternative possibile explanation for 10 pins: the surface got the ball into a roll too early for the condition and your hand/speed. Which is the right explanation is something only an astute observer might be able to see.
