Starburst or Liberator?
« on: February 08, 2008, 11:42:10 PM »
HI. I have one league that's a pretty dry shot where even my Power Groove Dry/R gets to be too much. Any suggestions which ball I should get? I have a White Dot for a spare ball so I won't need it for that. I have med revs at about 16 mph, PAP 5 3/4, high track. Thanks.

Have you thrown the White Dot?  The next step down from a Dry/R is gonna be urethane or plastic.  There's the Groove Urethane if you've gotta stick with Brunswick.  Also the AMF Black Angle is a urethane ball.  The XXXL is also for those really dry conditions.

The WD is strictly for spares. I'm just wondering whether the Liberator or the Starburst is better for burnt up conditions.

The Liberator is definitely not for dry lanes!
The XXXL would be the best bet for bone dry.
If you have a hint of oil left in the heads, but the mids are gone, try to find a Lane #1 Bullet.

Jon,

I suspect that if the Power Groove Dry/R is too much, then the Bullet will also be too much.

Moon, I think you need plastic.

I have not thrown a Dry/R, so I did not want to speculate. You are probably correct.

Sounds like I should the Starburst. I didn't realize the Liberator wasn't for dry alleys.

its still got a fairly aggressive cover, its not going to handle oil well, but it will roll as soon as it sniffs dry.  "in the day" urethane was a BIG step up in covers.  It offers a smoother reaction than that of reactive, but is not for truely dry lanes.

You say that you have a white dot, so you are familiar with the oil capabilities of a plastic ball, right? Not much polished and only a bit more dull.

Now, take that ball ( the plastic one ) and put a diamond weightblock in it and you have a high performance white dot.

Don't belittle what I say.  I have both the white dot and the xxxl.  The xxxl flares a bit, but ABSOLUTELY NEEDS THE DRY TO WORK! Handles a little more oil than a whitedot, but not much.

If your lanes aren't dry enough, or if they have some carrydown, the xxxl can fade at the pocket, so be sure and drill it pretty strong.

You can also adjust the coverstock to a duller finish if the factory finish is too shiny.  It could help a bit.

Juggernaut - I've got an old WD sitting in the basement that I could put in the spinner and put a 2000 surface on. Might give me some info on how much carrydown there is by the third game. But I'll probably wind up getting the Starburst anyway just to have a hi-po plastic in the arsenal.
