Super Carbide Bomb layout result
« on: February 02, 2005, 12:45:58 AM »
I drilled a SCB yesterday to use on a pattern that is pretty heavy from about 8 to 8 for something like 39 feet (taper).  The idea was to find a way to play deeper in the oil and avoid the hard wet/dry at the oil line.  Pin under bridge, CG out an inch (about a 45 degree layout).  Turns out to be very "rolly" and do just what I had in mind, though I didn't have to get quite as deep as I anticipated.  Stood on 31, laydown at 21, 11 at the arrows out to 9.  Extremely hard roll thru the heads and mids with excellent recovery on the back.  Plenty of punch to kick the corners unless I floated it a tad wide - then it would burn up  in the drier outside and hit weakly.  Shot 224 the first game, with 9 strikes (sheesh), then shot 221, clean.  Put it away after the second game as I wanted to take a look at another ball.  This is a new layout for me - for ages I tracked so high that I would never dream of putting a pin down in this fashion.  The track did come back up to about 1/4" from the thumb at first, but seemed to lower a bit as I went on.    So, all in all, I'm very pleased with the ball and drill (thanks T-GOD) and will probably keep this layout in mind for when I want something just roll up strongly on oil.

Something like 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 or 5.  I didn't use a coordinate layout when talking with the driller because I was going with the idea suggested by T-GOD.

ok...i woulnd't think this type of layout would flare a whole bunch giving you that backend you described...i'd think it would lope a lot more...hmmm interesting

Jeff, what happens with this is that it has already started to make its turn in the oil; it's not so much backend as midlane arc then roll.  The "recovery" isn't really on the back but has already started in the mids.  When it reads dry it is already heading in the general direction of the hole, so it really doesn't "move" all that much on the back end; covers maybe 8 or 9 boards total after it has started to turn.  It does sort of lope on the back, but since it's already headed towards the hole that works well.  As you might expect from the fact that it's particle it isn't any sort of hard turn, but a softer turn in the oil then fairly straight into the pocket.  And yes, not a lot of flare.

I have a Thing Lives drilled like that, with a 7/8" x 2" hole right in the mb.
770 last night with a pocket 7-10,..this is fast becoming one of my favorite drills,..pin under the middle works great too for a little more skid/flip..
