Dynamo -- Not so oldie but goodie

Over the past several weeks, I've mostly been throwing my non-Lane#1 arsenal to familiarize myself with the equipment and prepare for a few upcoming Regionals. It's mostly Columbia with a little bit of Hammer sprinkled in.

Well, I was throwing one of my Rivals in league the other night, and while I was scoring OK (230 average over the first two games), I wasn't getting the backend drive I looking for. So I switched to my Dynamo for the last two games, and things started to improve immediately.

With the Dynamo, I was able to move deeper and open up the lane. I averaged 267 over the last two games, and it would have been higher if not for two stone eights and one stone nine. The Dynamo has been my favorite Lane#1 ball over the past year, and given a choice, it's the first ball out of the bag.

My understanding is that Dynamos are being closed out, so if it's a ball you've been considering, now is the time to try and pick one up. While it's advantageous to have five extra boards on the lane for the Dynamo, it's not an absolute requirement. The Dynamo cover is very versatile to different cover preps (different Abralon finishes, polish or not), so with the right setup it can be used on a variety of medium to heavy conditions.

I'm hoping Lane#1 comes out with more Hurricane Diamond core based equipment in the future. It's been one of their better designs over the past several years.

Is comparing the Rival to the Dynamo a fair comparison?  The differential on the Dynamo is quite higher (0.049 vs 0.040) than the Rival.  Also, the Rival is a very rolly piece, and from what I've seen, seems to be more of a benchmark piece than a big mover on the backend.  Also, you switched to the Dynamo for the last 2 games.  Could some of the increased backend reaction that you were seeing attributed somewhat to the lanes breaking down?

No bashing intended here, just wondering if this is truly a fair comparison.

It's a fair question. No offense taken.

You're correct that the Rival is a basically a rolly piece. I like rolly pieces (more generally Lane#1 like), and it's one of the reasons I was sold on it for part of a non-Lane#1 arsenal.  

I drilled the referenced Rival up with a stacked pattern directly below the ring finger, and it's basically what Chris Barnes called an 80 percentor -- you can used it on almost anything but the extremes. I have a second Rival with a longer pin drilled CG-out with the pin above the fingers on the vertical grip line. This Rival has a very different look, with more length in the mids and a sharper backend.

Total hook between the Dynamo and my Rivals is very close, with a slight edge to the Dynamo. The difference (for me) is that with subtle hand position changes, I can get the Dynamo to react like either of the Rivals -- either rolly or more length with flip. I can't seem to get the same effective versatility out of either of the Rivals. I can stay with them as the lanes transition, but carry seems to diminish when taken outside of their optimum condition matchup.

I believe that core does make a big difference, and I attribute the difference in roll versatility to the Hurricane Diamond core. It's one of those cores that allows you to easily create different effective hook shapes with different hand positions. Again, I hope Lane#1 continues with this core somewhere down the line.

Just curious, not a Lane 1 regular but I was on USBC looking for some info and on the not approved ball list by USBC it has listed Dynamo.

No manufacture info for it or any other ball info just the ball name. Is this the same ball or did someone else make a Dynamo before Lane 1?

Right, approve on Jan/09

Then under non-conforming list updated 3/09/2010 is the Dynamo as well.

Seems kinda weird, which is why I was wondering if there is another Dynamo or if it is the same ball.

I went ahead and sent them an email, maybe they will respond some day.

I beleive there was a Dynamo Pearl test ball out there that wasn't approved...

The Dynamo on the Non-Conforming list is not the same as the Lane #1 Dynamo.  The Dynamo on the Non-Conforming list is from a foreign manufacturer, and we’ll soon have the Brand name listed on the Non-Conforming list as well to eliminate any confusion.  Thank you for your question.

kidlost2000: Thanks for the clarification. For a while, I thought jls might have got the Lane#1 Dynamo banned for needing 5 more boards.
