The Cobalt Bomb Solid--UPDATE!!!!!
« on: August 04, 2006, 07:35:45 AM »
I am going to be drilling my Cobalt Solid tonight and throwing it on the 2 patterns we have out at our center.

To see pics of the ball click on any of the 4 links listed below.

I have them on pre-order special for $169 shipped or order now and get a Cobalt Solid and a Clear XXXL for $285 shipped. Both balls will be shipped together once the Clear XXXL's arrive. If you want them shipped separately we can do that with an extra shipping fee.

I'll post more tonight once I get done drilling and throwing...

UPDATE.........

Here's the pics of the layout and the specs.

http://www.dougsproshop.net/images/Lane1/CobaltSolid5.jpg
http://www.dougsproshop.net/images/Lane1/CobaltSolid6.jpg

Predrill:
Gross weight....15-1
Top weight... 2.4 oz
Pin distance...3.5"

Layout: 35* with hole on PAP, thumb drilled extra deep to get rid of thumbweight
This was chosen at the suggestion of my ssales rep. He sais the ball clears the heads well but, unlike most solid resins, the ball is very weak in the midlane. So I didn't go with my normal 4x4 or similar because I didn't want it to be skid/flippy. I wanted to get it started up a hair earlier and have an arcy backend.

Ending specs:
Gross weight... 14-12
Side weight: 3/4 oz
Thumb weight: 3/4 oz

The oil pattern: PBA Senior Masters Shot
oil was laid a bit flatter than normal with an out of bounds from 5 out. The Shot was laid 42 feet with a nice crown across the middle but no bumper wall.

The result....
I decided to move everything in 5 boards from where I was playing with the Cobalt Pearl. This put me standing 35 playing 18 to about 10.

The first shot saw the ball roll across the middle smoothly, start it's turn around 42 feet and made a strong move left and boom...total destruction. I played around a bit more with hand postion and such to change the look of the ball and it responded VERY well. Add some tilt and it gets longer with more angular move. Up the back with your hand and it'll roll long and smooth.

Now I am noticing one thing here and it could very well be due to the specs (3/4 side and thumb)...I am tracking significantly different with this ball than my other Saws. I am MUCH closer to the fingers and WAY further from the thumb than my other stuff. My normal track is 3/4 - 1" off the fingers and thumb. This ball is tracking over the middle finger and about 2-1/2" from the thumb! I have an email into my rep to get his opinion but we shall see.

Despite the tracking issue this ball is nearly the perfect piece. The ball rolls true and hits amazingly. Roll it up the boards or move inside and grab a handful...the ball responds well and it carries across the board.

I hate to say it but....this ball reacts an awful lot like my old Blueberry and Black Raspberry. The Fusion 105 cover is a bit stronger than PK 18 so the overall reaction is more but it's a great roll. The ball will make people remember the Blueberry.....

It's going to be a great piece....

Oilhog...yes I am a Loc'er :-)  I got a comp set from the owner a year ago and have not looked back since. My thumb goes up and down so much through the course of the season it's silly. I started out the season last year with a fluorescent purple and ended the season with a cranberry insert in the ball...that's 4-5 sizes difference I think!!

Coachjim...I find the Solid to read a little better than the Tsunami and definitely has a stronger backend reaction. IT's still not snappy but overall is significantly stronger.

If I can get the flare issue straightened out I think I am going to love this ball.
