Thinking about going to a Lane 1 arsenal - Questions.
« on: May 04, 2008, 06:25:11 AM »
Thinking about going to a Lane 1 arsenal, and thought I would post this to get some ideas and feedback from Lane 1 users and drillers.

My specifications are: PAP – 5 1/4 over, 0 up or down. (high track – approximately ½ - ¾ from thumb and finger holes)

Speed at pin deck – 14.5 – 16.5 mph

More of a “tweener” style, comfortable playing inside or out.
“Old School” fingertip drilling, NO grips or thumb slug used.

House 1. – THS with conditions varying greatly, as we are second shift, and open play during the day. Medium to light, where sometimes heads dry up a bit, but carry down comes into play more often. Sometimes, medium oil, and pattern stays consistent, depending upon open play on pair. Synthetic lanes.

House 2. – Flat pattern, short oil, back-ends cleaned weekly. Track shot around 10, usually lighter oil for us, as league ahead of ours complained they can’t get any movement on their equipment. Again, second shift, follow mixed league, with the only constant thing about this house is that the lanes will hook, just how early.

Also, these pieces would be used in tournament, and travel league conditions, so please let me know your thoughts, and ideas, or suggestions.

My thoughts:

Supernova XP – stacked layout 4 ¾ X 4 ½ with pin over ring.

Teal Retro THS – stacked layout 4 ¾ X 4 ½ with pin over ring.

Uranium HRG – pin over bridge, cg slightly shifted right about ½ - ¾ positive sideweight.

Liberator – Label at 1:30 with pin right of ring, cg in palm, 4 X 4 ½.

Looking to get pieces with long pins, about 4 inches, and 3.5 plus on topweight. When balls are finished, would like to have fingerweight, positive sideweight, and topweight over 2.5 on each of them.

Can use surface adjustments to cover changing conditions.

Please share your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Unless the Teal is stronger than I think it is, you won't have anything beyond medium with that arsenal.

I recently myself made the switch over to Lane #1 as my primary ball company. I have a very similar style to yours (our PAPs are different) and we bowl on similar oil concentrations. We also share a like for longer-pin balls.

I would recommend finding someone who is still selling the Tsunami H20 and get one before they're gone. It's a good medium to medium-light ball and quite versatile. I would recommend a label 1:30 drill for it.

My current league arsenal is a Gold Nugget (medium-medium heavy), Tsunami H20 (medium-medium light), G-Force Evolution (medium-medium light) and a spare ball (non-Lane #1). However, I also have other pieces I can sub in or out depending on how much oil I think I'm going to see.

If you decide to use the four balls you've listed there, I would drill one of them label in addition to the Liberator. I've found label on the Buzzsaw and WAS cores to be money.

rk, I wouldn't recommend 2.5 ending top weight. That's a bit much. Other than that, I would agree with Jess, maybe label drill the THS. =:^D

Zeus's #1 advice on ball drilling...  "Don't waste a ball and money drilling a ball Label"...

All the balls listed are great balls.  The HRG might be a bit hard to come by with the disired SPECs.  I might also leave out the Liberator, as I feel it's stronger then most may think and is just going to overlap the other balls.  May consider the Starburst if your looking for a spare/toast condition ball.  All the layout, with the exception of the Label drill, will work great.  I may suggest CG-Out on the Teal though, and should become a benchmark ball.

Would agree with Zues only on the Starburst XXXL addition, with a strong drill. This can be used for spares and ultra dry lanes. From what I hear the Teal should get a similar look as the TSU...However I still have not tossed one yet, you might need a stronger ball for heavier oil units. IMO I would think about these 4:
1. Starburst XXXL
2. Evolution
3. Teal
4. Buzzbomb solid or pearl (when available)

Got the desired aresenal and layouts figured out! This is what I decided to go with, all balls will be long pins (4") and 3.5 - 4.0 topwieght to start. All balls will end up with POSITIVE sideweight, and fingerweight. Don't need to wrry about heavier oil conditions with these, as I can either adjustr the covers of the solids, or use another piece I currently have, just will have to dull it up.

Teal THS - Layout 4 3/4 X 4 1/2 - pin over ring, cg slightly shifted right of grip center line for positive sideweight.

Teal THS - Layout 5 X 3 - pin up, cg out, balance hole on lower quadrant - drilled to about 1/2 - 3/4 ounce positive sideweight

Uranium HRG - Layout 4 3/4 X 4 1/2 - pin voer ring, cg shifted slightly right of grip centerline for positive sideweight. May also polish this piece additionally.

Liberator - layout 4 3/4 X 4 1/2 - pin over bridge, cg slightly shifted right of grip centerline for positive sidieweight. Will keep OOB for now, but will polish as need arises.

My specs. are in origiinal post, so feel free to give opinions on this "set up!"

Not bad, But I wouldn't go with 2 Teals.  I like the Idea of the 5x3 Teal, but ditch the other and get a Supernova XP drilled Stacked 3 3/8 x 3 3/8.

And I still feel your never gonna use the Liberator cause it's going to overlap.

I agree with Zeus here....2 Teals may not be your best bet especially if you have a Liberator added in there.

A good 4 ball arsenal for the average house shots:

Super Nova XP or Nebula since you won't see HEAVY...4-1/2 x 4
Teal THS for your benchmark ball...pin outside & above ring, cg btw ring & thumb
G Force Evolution...pin over ring cg stacked or just right of stacked
Uranium HRG....pin over bridge cg stacked OR Starburst XXXL drilled strong

Just my opinion
