Layouts for SawMill's New Lane 1 Stuff
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:06:51 PM »
Here are the layouts that my driller, the infamous Doug Sterner, has decided will be awesome for me.  My profile and stats are listed in the profile.  He used Mo Pinel's new system below.

Dave

Mo's new system uses 3 pieces of information to define the layout...

CG-pin-pap angle
pin to pap distance
pin - pap- val angle

CG to Pin to PAP angle
This angle is between 10 and 90 degrees. A 10* angle will roll up the earliest, a 90* angle will generate the
most length.

Pin to PAP Distance
This is the same pin distance we have used for years. 3-3/8" from pin to PAP will generate max flare. Pin closer to PAP or further from PAP will decrease flare and move the breakpoint forward or backward on the lane.

Pin to PAP to VAL Angle
This angle is between 20 and 70 degrees. A 20 degree will cause the ball to rev up VERY quickly and be very angular at the breakpoint. A 70 degree will cause the ball to rev up later and be much smoother.

Your 4 balls.....let me know what you think.

BUZZBOMB:

30* x 3-3/4" x 25*

30* for earlier roll
3-3/4" for strong flare
25* for quick transition

LIBERATOR

70* x 4-1/2" x 45*

70* to roll later
4-1/2" for medium flare
45* for medium quick transition

SUPERNOVA

50* x 3" x 45*

50* for medium roll
3" for strong early flare
45* for medium quick transition

NOVA XP

40* x 4-1/2" x 45*

40* for earlier medium roll
4-1/2" for strong later flare
45* for medium quick transition

Looks like you've got the ranges covered; what I'll be interested to see is how well the Dual-Angle Technique works when applied to Lane #1 balls. I realize logic says it should work as well on Lane #1 as anything else, but I've been reluctant to go "off the sheet" with Lane #1 balls given some of my past issues with touchiness and this company's stuff. If DAT proves to work great for you, that will give me some more options for the future.

Jess...I have been using the Dual Angle system since I first heard about it. The only ball I have not done this way is my Teal THS since my sales rep told me to "drill it this way" and I of course obeyed :-)

While I would say the DAT maximizes the dynamics in Mo's own equipment I think the DAT enhances the probabililty that the desired reaction will be achieved.

The 17 pages of instructions would seem a bit intimidating at first but once you start with the system it becomes easier as you do more balls.

What I have done is to make a cheat sheet, laminate it and have hung it on the wall behind my work area for easy access (right next to my Target Weighting chart and Jayhawk weight removal chart).

The challenge with drilling for David is 2 fold....

1. he's 3000 miles away from me
2. he has decent hand but a lot of speed so he tends to take medium oil balls and use them on dry and his heavy oil balls tend to work well on medium

Tell us what you guys think about my choice of layouts.

Oh yeah hey Dave....how's the BuzzBomb working??

I have no problem with DAT; it may be the simplest thing I've ever seen in regards to laying out balls. I've used it quite a bit.

I've just been hesitant to use it on Lane #1 pieces because every Lane #1 ball I've owned that was not drilled in accordance with one of the 7-8 options they give you for each ball ended up a big ol' dud. So since I've started drilling for myself, I've stayed to their sheets. Doesn't make logical sense, I know, but the results speak for themselves. I'd try DAT on a Lane #1 ball again, but if I do and it doesn't work, then I've made an expensive mistake.

Doug,

Have not had the opportunity to bowl as I was bitten by a dog, on the palm and middle finger of my bowling hand, and it has just now healed.  I also need to get a larger middle finger insert, as the one normally used seems too tight for some reason.  I will get to use it next week, when I get an insert.

Oh, and for the record, Doug Sterner handles the challenges of drilling for me with ease.  I have NEVER had a bad drilling on ANY Lane 1 stuff since I started using him.  I remember how he got my specs for drilling, I sent him a ball I had drilled by another driller, and he nailed the specs to a "T".  He even made changes without seeing me, that were on the money.  I would hate to see what Doug really sees as a challenge for him.  No bowler here would ever go wrong with having Doug drill for him.
