Harry:
I hear the cost argument all the time, while I am not accusing you of doing this, I beleive that it is over exagerated by the Lane #1 bashers. I will admit that Lane #1 balls do cost slightly more than other high end bowling balls, but just because a person can buy a low end Brunswick or Columbia ball for $89.95 doesn't mean your high-end Lane #1 ball is double the cost of an equivalent ball.
Lane #1, like any smaller ball company, is limited in it's ability to market low and medium range bowling balls. One of the reasons I like Lane #1 is that they don't offer 50-60 different bowling balls, which often are essentailly the same ball in a different color. Each Lane #1 ball is a distinctive ball, in it's own niche as it relates to coverstock and behavior.
I am not knocking Columbia, Brunswick or any of the other big manufacturers, there is a market for low and medium range balls and they should and do fill a need for these customers. These companies also offer high-end bowling balls, and though they tend to be slightly cheaper than Lane #1, they are still quite expensive. I would not recommend any bowler buy an expensive high-end bowling ball if they cannot truely afford it and their game has not advanced far enough to recognize the difference.
I'm not attemting to sell anyone on a ball they can not afford, but I would point out to potential new Lane #1 users, that the risk they take in testing a Lane #1 ball really isn't any greater than any other high-end ball, since the resale value of used Lane #1 balls is higher than any other brand. I continually hear the Lane #1 bashers talking about $300.00 Lane #1 ball, and claiming they can buy top of the line Columbia or Brunswick balls for less than $75.00. An argument is always easier to win when comparing one companies full MSRP with used price.
Just for arguments sake I took a price survey at a typical online seller. I collected the price ranges for each companies top of the line balls. Notice that the price ranges are only slightly less than Lane #1, and these prices don't account for the better resale value of the Lane #1 balls.
