Thinking About Trying Lane 1 Again
« on: October 11, 2005, 03:29:16 PM »
After having bad luck with Lane 1 balls in the past (had 5 and only 1 worked), I am thinking about trying another one. I think that I may have instructed the drilling layout to be layed out wrong as I have since found out that balls with the Pin under RF and CG kicked out (approx. 4 x 3 1/2) or stacked type drilling of 3 1/2 x 3 1/2, seem to work best for me.

Read my profile and then feel free to offer suggestions.

Brickguy, which balls did you have? Were any or all of them bomb core?

Blueberry, Emerald (this one worked the best out of the 5 but left a lot of 10 Pins), Golden Nugget, Uranium Pearl, and the XXXL. All were label drilled.

Here you go Brickguy. You may only need to fill the fingers for pitches & move the thumb slightly. It may be worth a try if you can get it for a decent price!

I wouldn't stop anyone from giving something another chance, but I wonder at the logic myself.  "Wrong" or at least non-optimized drilling shouldn't have a huge impact on a bowler's success with a product.  Cover is supposed to be much more important, plus buzzheads always point out how consistent and forgiving Buzzsaws are supposed to be.  It sounds like the way the ball's roll don't match up well with Brickguy's style.  I don't seem to match up with Lane#1 or Ebonite.  Very "rolly", but not enough hit for me.  I know plenty of other people who throw the same balls with success, so it's not the ball's fault.  I can even throw other companies early rolling, arcing pieces with success, so it's not my fault or the nature of when the balls do their thing.  I believe certain people weren't meant to throw certain equipment.  Hopefully that is not the case for Brickguy.

Trigger, "exactly." Especially the "not any pop on the back end" part.

OK Brick, I was reading your profile, and have noticed that you have almost the same specs as me, as I throw the ball about 15-16mph, with about 250 rpm. I have found that not all Lane#1 works for me either. What I will suggest, is a Uranium pearl with the pin next to ring, CG in palm. I just got mine drilled last week, and I haven't shot under 210 with the ball yet. It is very strong, yet is still very controlled at the break. I threw it the last two games last night, and shot 211-258 (216 the first game with my Wired). I would suggest the original Carbide Bomb solid (the army green one), but I'm not sure if you can find one. That ball is EXCELLENT on med./heavy shots (except floods), and really lets me open up the lane more than I normally can (for the amount I put on the ball). Hope this helps. Also, if you wanna message me, I can tell you all the Lane#1 equipment that I've used in the past, and how they worked for me.

I have had success with CG-out drillings with most of my Lane 1 equipment. The only ball I tried with a label drilling was the Pearl Uranium and there was not enough pop. I drilled another one with my favorite 5 X 4 drilling (pin over ring) and I like the hit. Hope this helps.

Willy, that is a label drill. I had that ball and drilling and it didn't work. Like trigger said, with that drilling and my profile, that ball "had no pop on the back end" for me.

And Rock Bowler says:

Which is the same as trigger said as well as me also.

I still appreciate your input, Willy.

Hmm...don't I feel like a pro shop driller now...

I guess I was picturing you said leverage instead of label...my bad!

Anyway, my mistake...

PS...Mine does give a good amount of reaction on the backend...I don't know why yours wouldn't...Hmm..maybe the backup shot adds "POP" to the backend...

Brick: We've discussed this in the past, and as much as I love Lane#1, I'd recommend not going back. You gave Buzzsaws an honest try, and they didn't work for you.

At some point, I'm going to post a topic in the Miscellaneous section on the "Case for Buzzsaws". Not from the perspective of trying to convert bowlers to the brand, but to present an argument for giving them a try. At the very least, the diamond core gives you excellent (and honest) feedback on your release, and that by itself is worth the price of admission. My feeling is that if you can learn to throw a Buzzsaw well, you'll throw anything you own better.

Harry:

I hear the cost argument all the time, while I am not accusing you of doing this, I beleive that it is over exagerated by the Lane #1 bashers.  I will admit that Lane #1 balls do cost slightly more than other high end bowling balls, but just because a person can buy a low end Brunswick or Columbia ball for $89.95 doesn't mean your high-end Lane #1 ball is double the cost of an equivalent ball.

Lane #1, like any smaller ball company, is limited in it's ability to market low and medium range bowling balls. One of the reasons I like Lane #1 is that they don't offer 50-60 different bowling balls, which often are essentailly the same ball in a different color. Each Lane #1 ball is a distinctive ball, in it's own niche as it relates to coverstock and behavior.

I am not knocking Columbia, Brunswick or any of the other big manufacturers, there is a market for low and medium range balls and they should and do fill a need for these customers. These companies also offer high-end bowling balls, and though they tend to be slightly cheaper than Lane #1, they are still quite expensive. I would not recommend any bowler buy an expensive high-end bowling ball if they cannot truely afford it and their game has not advanced far enough to recognize the difference.

I'm not attemting to sell anyone on a ball they can not afford, but I would point out to potential new Lane #1 users, that the risk they take in testing a Lane #1 ball really isn't any greater than any other high-end ball, since the resale value of used Lane #1 balls is higher than any other brand. I continually hear the Lane #1 bashers talking about $300.00 Lane #1 ball, and claiming they can buy top of the line Columbia or Brunswick balls for less than $75.00. An argument is always easier to win when comparing one companies full MSRP with used price.

Just for arguments sake I took a price survey at a typical online seller. I collected the price ranges for each companies top of the line balls. Notice that the price ranges are only slightly less than Lane #1, and these prices don't account for the better resale value of the Lane #1 balls.

Jim bomb core under ring finger in 40-45 degree area will work well for you, the reaction difference between bomb core and c2 diamond core is much more angurality out of the bomb core and smooth maybe too long out of a label drilled c2/diamond core.

These cores are not the same but give totally different looks on the lanes, as you know i have or have had every lane 1 ball made in recent years back to silver diamond days still have 2 of those in arsenal.

Go with dirty bomb pearl 2-3 pin drilled pin under ring finger cg at 40-45 degrees and keep positive weight at 1/2 - 3/4 oz, also keep weight holes below val to help ball start earlier for you. I have exact ball and it is a keeper withis setup starts early and never quits through the pin deck.

The h2o is ok ball you might make a mistake with that ball unless you have much lighter pattern you bowl on, i do not have tsumani yet have not found a decent enough deal yet.

The hybrid is good ball i had this one above my bridge and cg below at grip center ball motored on the backend was too flippy for my like but then again so is the drill i was talked into. I sold and the guy who bought loves it so you never know but i like early drillings so i know what to do on the next ball.

I want to thank all who provided information/comments/etc. here. Guys, I really appreciate it. I'd forgotten how responsive Lane 1 people are in trying to help/advise someone. First I have to get my current health problem corrected and am supposed to find out next week about it. Once on the road to recovery, I will take all that you people have told me here (both positive and negative) and make a choice.

Again, many thanks.
