Do all Lane #1 balls have as thin of cover as the Boom R'ang, I was shocked to see how thin the cover was after I drilled it up. You would think for what they cost the cover would be over a 1/4" thick.

All in all it is fair to say that every companys gear cracks/dies somewhat these days. I dont know if cover thickness makes a huge difference or not but I can tell you I havent had any of my Seismic stuff die on me. I had a Epicenter Crack due to my own stupidity in. IMO 900's product any product is just as good as Storms and Ebonites products and affilitates/subsidies.

Anyone like the thick covers on the Storm "Agent" balls? I swear my S.A. cover was at least 1 inch thick... Sorry to hyjack this thread but I was not the first one! LOL

Then, you have never drilled most LM/L or Visionary equipment....the majority of them have very thick covers.

as someone stated earlier all companies have cracking issues today as they try and take cost out of the balls, I am at my distribs most every day and the amount of balls returned with cracking issues is crazy I see alot of cracks brought on by drillers, IE dull bits, pushing too hard, no bevel, but the number of balls cracked in half is crazy now. I dont see alot from my lane 1 stuff but have had a couple crack on me over the past several years as well. I have one guy that his crack continually (his release i presume puts the ball down right on the bridge) my fix? his bridge is now a tad wider to accomodate this, will see if it helps him out

Im up to 10 lane 1's and the covers are all over 1/2 inch thick as well. You might try to get ahold of lane one just to check there warranty on stuff like that.

I have noticed the shells being thinner. However i have had few problems with saturation unlike I've seen with Ebonite products. Storm products currently have thickest shells from the major lables and VBP still does encapsulated balls so no filler in them. I wish Lane #1 would produce there product in house, because they fall to the mercy of thet factory. When Columbia was pouring the G-Force line I found poor quality control and mismarked mass bias.

thinnest cover I have seen thus far is on an AMF sideways I just took in, litteraly 1/4" at its thickest

I had one (SIDEWAYS) that had the same thing, and yes, it cracked. Good thing was, Eric and the guys in San Antonio warranteed it with no problems.

I really don't know what's going on, but seems that quite a bit of the stuff coming out of S.A. has been on the thin shell side. Or at least it seems that I've been hearing about an odd amount of them.

this one has a cracked bridge, but i got it used so i am not worried about it right now, will just plg the fingers and fix the crack, but I was amazed at how thin that cover was

It all make sense..

Thinnest shells on bowling balls due to the fact that the bowlers that use them have the thinnest skin

We can also include the Roto Grip Nomad solid/pearl or Dagger hybrid. Those are just cover and core without any filler material.

The reason the covers are so thin is because the cores weight 7-8 pounds now. If you were to pour the rest of the ball with just coverstock, the ball would weight 20 pounds! The low density filler is needed to take up the space while not adding much to the weight.

If we all would go back to the good old days of core and cover ( like the Turbos and Hammers and U-2's) then this would be a moot point. I don't ever remember an old Hammer ball cracking.....Turbo X's and XL's had core separation issues but that's another story.

Let's go away from the new super cores that make the new super covers flare 2,000 times and suck every last bit of oil off the lanes. Rhino Pros, Hammers, Turbos, U-2's, Beasts......the cores in those balls were plenty strong. Let's add in the new super covers and you have a winning combo in my mind.
