What hole in a bag would the chainsaw fill?
« on: July 14, 2009, 12:06:45 PM »
I got a chance to pick up a Chainsaw and was wondering where it would fit in an arsenal and how would you recommend drilling it ?

Thanks,

Unless you've got a lot of revs it will be the driest slot you can imagine. Mine actually moves about as much as my XXXL Starburst does.

The ball did not match up to me well, at all. Worst Lane #1 matchup to my game ever, in fact.

But higher-rev guys seem to like it because it does manage the backend move. That much is true. Unfortunately, for me (medium to low-medium revs) I had to slow it down to get it to work, and slowing the ball down substantially opens the door to over-under.

I will probably sell mine ASAP.

no offense Jess, but many more people like theirs, than don't.

to answer the op's question from my vantage point, It is definitely for dry lanes, but I have also found that when I can't score w/ other challenging conditions I can pull out this ball and play straight up the boards and still score, when other stuff did not work.

It's a must have IMO
truly a great release

. . . the chainsaw would be great for short oil play
. . . with RG Diff at .013
. . . in fact, I would drill mine even tamer
. . . with pin above bridge and cg at 45*

Thank you for the replies.

But does it make sense to have both the Gemstone and the Chainsaw in the same arsenal?

Thanks again,

I think it would. I see the Gemstone in the same league with the 900Global Link and the Storm Tropical. Both balls are reported to be stronger than pure dry-lane balls (probably due to the cover). In fact, if Storm still has a contract with the San Antonio plant to pour Tropicals (Columbia used to pour the Tropical), it may very well be that the Tropical, Link and Gemstone balls are all pretty much identical in execution (especially given their weight block shapes/distributions) or at least as close as you can get across three companies.

If that's true for the Gemstone, what you've got is a ball that feels at home on medium-light, which makes sense given the differential on it versus the diff on the Chainsaw. The Chainsaw is for absolute toast, and I think people who are using it on mediums either have more hand than they know or there's less oil out there than they suspect. I get almost 2 inches of flare out of a XXXL Starburst and I had to punch a hole in a Chainsaw to get even 1 inch.

While that may be true, there are a number of people out there for whom this ball was not the Holy Grail, many of them very Lane #1-friendly people. Ask Doug Sterner what he thinks, for example (sorry to drag you into this, Doug).

I think it's important people don't get sold a bill of goods and whether you match up with a ball or not depends more on you than the ball. Having said that, certain styles are incapable of matching up with certain equipment, no matter how it's drilled or surface-prepped. A guy throwing 12 mph with 400 revs has no business throwing a Striking Motion on about 99.9 percent of the conditions he'll ever see, for instance. My game and the Chainsaw are similarly incompatible.

Not knowing anything about Nicanor's game (no info in the profile), if you're trying to create a Lane #1 fan it doesn't make sense to just tell someone that all balls from a single company will match up to him when they probably won't, and then we're back to the BuzzBomb saga all over again when they end up with something they can't use.

My impression from the Chainsaw, given its RG/diff numbers and the serene coverstock, is that it's extremely sensitive to conditions and the bowler's release. If you have a diff that low and you're not absolutely throwing on dirt, if you get outside your target line off your hand you're just not going to see much recovery at all, for example. The ball will straighten up too quickly. That was my chief complaint with it -- you've got hold for days, but miss out and you were going to leave some combination with the head pin in it. And I don't know a lot of guys who have the accuracy needed to play up 2 on THS every shot.

But if you're a max-rev guy who can't keep from crossing over, this ball ought to be the thing you've been needing in your bag since forever.

For me The Chinsaw is right above my Crystal diamond. It is a great light oil ball and when the lane are fried. On the ths at my house It it not enough ball. I am a lower rev bowler and this ball is great for me

The chainsaw is a great ball for dry lanes.

I'm averaging 212 with it durring the summer (185 avg last winter before the C-Saw) In fact, since Jess mentioned his name already, I have Doug Sterner's Chainsaw.  I know it didn't work for him, but just a change of the thumb for my span, and this ball is money for me!  I throw it up the second arrow out to about the 5 board and it hammers the pocket.  I'm not a high revs guy either (not sure what my rev rate is but it's probably around 300 max).

Mine is drilled pin below ring with the CG kicked out and a large x-hole in the thumb quadrant.
