Disappointed with Lane 1 quality
« on: March 16, 2011, 04:53:59 AM »
Hello,

Just wanted to drop a line about a NIB Liberator I punched recently. I purchased two and drilled one so far. The one I drilled I put the pin above my fingers and CG in the palm. Ball is a 1st Q ball. I had read reports on here and other sites about the supposed lack or less than great quality products for Lane 1 since Global started pouring the orbs. While I had not punched any Global poured ball (Global, AMF, Lane 1, Radical) I decided the price was right and was what I wanted in my arsenal.

When I went to pick the ball up from the shop, I discovered a large void between the cover and core where the fingers are drilled (I do not use grips). This was not due to the shop messing up as when you peered into the finger holes, one could plainly see the void was more than a small air bubble that I happened to drill into. Instead of sending the ball back, I decided to float the fingers to fill the void and redrill through the plug. Ball is fine now, but, with a first quality ball and my first try with Lane 1, this does not leave a great taste in my mouth. Makes me think twice before dropping money on a full priced ball from Lane 1 or Global, AMF, or Radical ball if this is what I am going to run into. Paying the shop to float the fingers to fill the void just so I can throw a brand new ball and pay an extra $20 on top of the drilling charge is not what I want to do for any further purchases.

Has anyone else run into large voids in Liberators or any other Global poured Lane 1 product?

Thanks

In my opinion your shop charging you $20.00 to surface fill the holes and drill back into is raping you. As far as the void goes i have seen this from all the manufacturers. It happens

I had the same thing with my Tsunami
but ball reaction was not diminished by any means!

Tsunami was poured by Brunswick then . . .

I guess these voids are formed by the bubbles during the pour.

Had it happen with a Track 505A about two months ago. NIB and first quality.

It happens, and they will replace it if you choose.

Had the same problem with a Dynamo x2 and I was told if the ball craked further, they would replace it.

There is a lighter material that is between the pin and the core. If a hole is drilled too close to the pin and angled towards the pin, the material 'dissolves' giving the appearance of a void.

Hmmm..no grips, so the holes are only the size of my little fingers. The pin is approx 1 inch above my fingers. Would this still be too close Rico? As for this as well, I usually just toss Visionary. I have all of my equipment drilled identical (pin above fingers, cg in the palm). My Granite Gargoyle, Violt Gargoyle, Ogre Particle, Ogre Pumpkin, Burgundy Gryphon, and Blue Green Centaur, and not a single one of them had a void, but, the balls also did not have a wrap around the core, they have thicker shells.

I agree, if the ball performs, that is all I am looking for. Just a shame that because I throw no grips I could not throw the ball as is and had to spend more money before I could even toss the ball.

With most of the balls on the market, sans smaller companies such as Visionary, they all use a filler material and this equates to the necessity of the void between the pin and the core.

And unfortunately even 1" can be too close when dealing with this situation due to the fact that the pin is not always at a straight angle into the ball as well as the core could be off center.

I have numerous customers that we have to be careful with, in regards to no grips and too close to the pin, with this situation.

Thanks for the info Rico. I appreciate it.

If I had used grips, I would not have even noticed the issue. And as I have said before, if the product performs, who cares. Just hope this does not lead to any other issues that have been reported here about Global poured products.

Rico is correct. You will see voids like this alot in ALL companies balls. I sell alot of all companies and they are all the same to say the least..

90% of them will warranty the balls if you choose...

When buying a discontinued ball from an Internet website at a fraction of the price.. Especially a niche ball like a Liberator...You can't send them back for warranty because there are not anymore balls to replace them with.

Lane#1 and 900Global's quality and customer service is as good or better than the other big manufacturers..

I can't give away Visionary balls so I have not drilled any to comment on that....It is what it is...

Good luck with your bowling and your Liberator..
