Title: Uranium HRG and carrydown
Post by: charlest on January 18, 2007, 05:00:26 PM
Drilled it fairly strong: pin under ring finger, 4" pin to PAP, Cg 5" to PAP. Hit carrydown at end of 1st game and it would not finish: left washouts and weak 10 pins. Couldn't go outside carrydown as it was too strong off the real dry. Wonderful on house blended shot until carrydown.
Had to switch to milder non-Lane#1 ball to play outside & go around carrydown.

On what I view as true medium oil, the ball, as drilled, had an almost hook and set type of breakpoint. Carry was good and it was easy to hit the pocket. On slightly high hits, the ball seemed to break up splits quite nicely, for the most part.

First Lane#1 ball since the Golden Nugget. GN was first Lane#1 ball since the Pro Purple. Wide array of Lane#1 ball reactions.

Carrydown has never been a pearlized reactive's strong suit.

Are you sure?

Some react better than others. For me to make serious note of it, as I did here, this ball is HIGHLY allergic to carrydown and that surprises me for an M80 coverstock. It might be the HRG's low RG differential which creates low flare.

I have a Brunswick ball made for Revolution, called the Renegade, a plain resin pearl. It has a higher RG, 2.62 to the HRG's 2.55, and an equally low RG differential, .033 to the HRG's .029, and it not only handles more oil, it handles more carrydown as well. Both are drilled the same. But they seem to complement one another. There was too little oil to use the Renegade last night; so I started with the HRG. It worked until there was carrydown. To be honest it was expected at this place. Might have been caused by the previous mixed handicap league.

Still I liked what I saw of the HRG. We'll see how it develops.

I would be surprised to hear someone recommend any polished reactive pearl for carrydown.  Wouldn't you?  I am a firm believer that the coverstock and coverstock prep (finish) play a much bigger role in determining ball reaction and which lane conditions it can and cannot handle.  Speaking of M80, I had an Action Packed that skated in any amount of carrydown.  However, it shined on fresh backends.  I reckon you could try scuffing the cover of the HRG (strip the polish off) and then it might handle some minor carrydown.

Conquering carrydown is all about using either the next stronger ball or going inside or around it. The next stronger ball could easily be another pearl resin. It doesn't have to be a solid, a particle or a matte finish ball.

If I scuffed the HRG to handle the carrydown, it wouldn't handle the condition for which it is designed: it would hook earlier and more. If it and I can't handle the carrydown, then I switch balls, as I did.

My 2 cents on pearl reactives on carry down.

From my experience this year in a large center following a 4 man work league on 1st generation Bruns. Anvilane.  By 2nd and 3rd games I am normally using an RG Saturn at times a shiny solid or at times a C300 HyJinx.  Many times the last month as weather has gotten colder the HyJinx with it's coverstock Big Flip Strong in OOB finish 2000 w/ polish Rg of 2.500 0.031 works better on carry down than the Saturn or even a particle pearl like a DT VPP.

HyJinx has a 5 1/4" pin to PAP pin centered above fingers over bridge CG on mid grip line shifted to a 60 deg. layout.  Could be my technique or how I match up but HyJinx lately has "shined" in carry down where I would have thought a pearl reactive would struggle.

So, YMMV on lane condition bowled on and your technique.

beleive it or not i liked my hrg more for carry down the fresh, it is extremely clean thru the heads, and for me with 450+ revs, i can move right, be more direct and see a beautiful reaction when the lanes break down, it is not at all a big hook on this shot for me, but definitely a hit 15 out to the 12 at the break and crush the pocket type shot.  for me when playing a bigger part of the lane, the ball did not finish on carrydown, but as i stated, if i moved right and firmed up the speed it was golden

And me with my miserly 300 revs, cannot use it for carrydown. Shezam!

When I moved right, it overreacted because it was too strong. I had to go to a more even pearl meant for lighter oil.

I didn't want to get into which other brands but since you started it (), I used a DynoThane Crisis Pearl. I think the HyJinx is about the same strength as the HRG, medium oil, but more even reacting. The Crisis Pearl is for light to medium-light oil; it's a very arc-y ball.

have you tried knocking the factory polish off of it yet?  i have heard that taking the ball to 2000 abralon with no polish makes it really go

Crisis Pearl nice ball I've heard.

As far as any thread being holy....ooooohhhhh well it's about helping other bowlers not helping some mfg.  I could care less if Lane #1, Brunswick or Visionary is involved.  It's about helping others for me.

charles,

If you want to stay Pearl, you could try the Pearl Uranium, but for me I would go with a Tsunami or the Solid Uranium, as long as you can get it through the heads, which may require a little polish (me, I have enough speed to do that).
Just my 2.5 cents.

Dave,

Thanks, but I wasn't looking for another ball. As I said, the carrydown was unusual in this house and in this league. I do have balls to conquer the situation. I shot 211 and 276 after finding the carrydown. I was just reporting on the behavior of the HRG in which I thought the Lane#1 people would be interested.

I pull out my Uranium Solid when I start to seeing carry down..But normally, the H20 dose the trick, being LH'd, don't NORMALLY have to bring the SU out too often.. With the H20, I bump around it.. usually a 6 w/feet and 3 w/mark adjustments...

Yeah, I had one hell of a time with my HRG in carrydown last night. The opposing team had two women using plastic, one guy using urethane, and the other two were just all over the place with newer soakers. First game I was OK, but then things got real touchy. I struggled throught the second game, then went to the Army Green Carbide Bomb for the 3rd game, and threw a little harder and more direct. I should have made the switch in the beginning of the second game.

I love my HRG, but I need to be quicker to make a change when it is not working under certain conditions.
