Title: Versions of the XXXL
Post by: holland1945 on February 28, 2009, 12:21:45 AM: I have a red XXXL, which I understand is "Columbia before the switch". The black then, I'm assuming, was Brunswick? Then the new Starburst would obviously still be Columbia but is there any hardness difference, core differences, etc.?

I'm tired of my red XXXL and considering getting a Starburst XXXL or the new MoRich spare ball but I'm interested in hearing about any differences between the 3 versions of the XXXL. I know I've read that the Starburst has cracking problems so if the quality is not there I want to avoid it...I'm sure Lane #1 would replace it but I don't want to deal with it, you know?

Also, my red XXXL is up for grabs along with a Slate Blue Quantum in trade (along with a couple of others) if you check my profile (sorry for the cheap plug)...

I've had my Starburst since they came out and except for a chip on the edge of my X-Hole I haven't had any issues with cracking...

IMO if your throwing 100 MPH at a TEN pin and you throw several of them in the gutter any plastic ball will crack..

doesnt matter whos they are

too much super glue on the inserts, and not enough bevel on the holes will speed the chipping process

Post by: holland1945 on February 28, 2009, 03:17:36 PM: Well, perhaps, but I've had multiple Target Zones (seem softer) with no problems, and I had an Ebonite Gemstone that chipped ridiculously bad around the thumb and on the bridge, all drilled by the same (very reputable) driller. My XXXL has been find thus far as has my Lane Hawk Watermelon. If the Starburst has a higher occurrence of cracks and chipping than average I don't want to touch it, but if it's about the same then I will be strongly considering it because it's a sweet looking ball.

I mean it's up to you
my take is that this plastic will give you something the other ones can't.
thats just me.

tell you what
i'll go out on a limb

if you get it, and something goes wrong in the first 18 months

you can have a replacement one for free

The Black (and clear?) were poured by Brunswick, the Red by Columbia, and the Starburst by 900 Global. I don't know how much each company's polyester differs, but if you're keeping it highly polished, I can't imagine there would be much of a difference in covers.
