Was I mistaken?
« on: August 17, 2004, 04:04:26 AM »
Hey saw fans,

I've been trying to get my arsenal in check for the upcoming season, and I think I may have been thinking incorrectly. Here are the balls that I'll be working with:

Uranium Solid
Anomaly (polished)
Golden Nugget
Thing
Thing Returns
Target Zone

At this time I'm trying to sell or trade the Thing and Thing Returns in order to pick up a truly dry lane ball like the Barrage or Bullet.

Anyhow, I was originally thinking that I wanted the GN for mediums with a bit of carrydown, as I thought that the pearl cover would get the ball through the heads but the particle would help it chew through juice down the lane. However, after reading reviews and talking to people I'm beginning to think that I was wrong. Here is what I'm thinking now:

The Anomaly, being polished, will be a better carrydown ball, as the polish will get it through the front and the strong solid cover and core will bring it back down the lane. The GN, on the other hand, can be used as a solid medium THS type of ball. What do you guys think? Would this be a better use for the GN, rather than trying to make it work on carrydown, something that it might not be meant for? The GN is currently laid out with the pin above the bridge and the cg kicked right. I usually don't use that pattern so I'm thinking of redrilling it and laying out label. What do you guys think? I have slightly above average speed and revs, and I track high. I can play down and in or move inside to 4th or 5th arrow. Thanks for the help!

Not bad choices. Good layout on the Nugget. One of my favorites.. The hitting power between the Barrage and Bullet won't be comparable. The Bullet is going to be twice as good on the dry...Although I am PRO Buzzsaw all the way...I do like some of the Dyno-Thane I drilled for people...Except for the Thing Line!!! Maybe that can swerve you towards that Black Cherry Bomb I said would work on the carrydown.  Beans

Jeff,

That's pretty much the exact thoughts that I had. At this point I don't have the Bullet, so the TR is the only light condition ball that I have. It seems to work nice for light, however, because I can flatten my hand out to keep the ball long to go along with my higher-than-average speed. The great thing is that I can also turn the ball up harder and come around the side more if I want to as well. I might not need the Bullet after all, although I still want one. lol

Beans,

I decided to keep the above mentioned layout on the GN. It wasn't fit for my hand, but I was able to throw it a bit and I really liked the look. It's very smooth but still very angular and hard hitting. It seems as if that ball will recover from anywhere! I'll have to see whether or not it will work on carrydown, but, nevertheless, it gives me a good enough look that I don't play on getting rid of it anytime soon. As I mentioned above, I'm not sure if I'm going to pick up the Bullet or not. The only way I probably would is if I get rid of something else. I don't want to carry any more than 6 balls. The only way that I'd get the Bullet is if I did something like this:

Uranium Solid-Heavy
Anomaly (Polished)-Med-Heavy or mediums with some carrydown
Gold Nugget-Possible carrydown, or to move deep and swing the lane on the THS
Thing-Standard mediums
TR-Lighter mediums
Bullet-Dry

I'm not sure if I truly need a plastic or not, as I can't seem to get the hang of it. Besides, I'm also pretty good at flattening out my hand and throwing the TR hard and straight at spares anyhow. If I got the Bullet, I may be able to flatten and use that at some spares as well. I really don't want to spend the money to buy the Bullet, however, so I'm not sure if I'll be getting that one or not. Only time will tell. Maybe I'll wait and see how the TR does on the dryer shots that I see in second shift. If it works, then I won't need the Bullet. If the TR gets too jumpy, perhaps I'll have to give Lane 1 a call. ; )

Thanks again for the suggestions. Does anyone else have anything to add?

If you are going to deal with carrydown you "do not" want anything shiny. Mo has a great article on this in BTM 2004. No shiny balls in carrydown. So many people make that mistake and try to go around it. You want something that will roll in to midlane that will have a little snap left for the carrydown. I would put the Anomaly at 800 ot 1000 sand to get through the carrydown. One of the guys in my league is on staff and his is in that condition. You will get a better read. You might possibily be able to put the Nugget in this condition also but I don't know much about Lane 1. Maybe someone else here can answer that for you.
