What surface?
« on: July 19, 2003, 10:00:17 PM »
I just bought a BB. It is drilled with the pin below the ring finger, CG kicked out about 2" so it is pretty much in line from the pin, weight hole about 4 inches directly to the right. I am not sure about this tech stuff. I think he said it was label leverage drill?? Not sure

Anyway... This is the biggest P.O.S i have ever thrown. My ENG just kicks the crap out of it.

I was thinking maybe I should change the cover some. It was out of box condition when I used it the last few night. I never really know where it is going to go. Kind of a "Hail Mary" shot everytime I throw it.
Look at my profile and let me know what you all think.

Thanks,
Ty

Don't bounce it off the dry. Move 2-3 boards left if right handed and keep it in the oil a little more. Sand it to 1000 and let it sanded to smooth it out a little. I have one at 800 drilled with the pin beside ring and cg in palm and one drilled with the pin below ring and cg kicked polished after sanding to 1000-1200. I get a ton of snap with the second one. The first one is much more even but still very damn strong. I almost have to have a little carrydown to use the polished one as there is never enough fresh oil to use it. Last but not least if you hate it that much I know a guy that may be interested.... used to go by curly on here but changed it...... not sure what it is now.

My best guess:
If you left both balls in their stock cover condition, the ENG is matte or dull and around 1000 grit, while the BB is roughly 1500 grit, and highly polished. As a ball park guess, the BB will handle much less oil than the ENG. If you are on medium to medium heavy oil and the ENG is reacting fine, the BB may skid 50 feet, playing the same line, and never get to the pocket. If you want the BB to replace the ENG rather than complement it, then you will have to sand the BB to around 800 to 1000 grit.

If the BB is not replacing the ENG, then leave them as they are and when the heads are too dry for the ENG or the lanes are just hooking too much, the BB may be a good go-to ball to complement the ENG. ENG: medium to medium-heavy oil and the BB: Medium to medium-light oil. Just a suggestion.

I'd think the drilling is closer to stacked leverage than label leverage; that's a fairly strong drilling for a Blueberry, but may work fine for you.

Thanks for the replies. It is not going to replace the ENG. I was wanting it to go right under it. Meaning just as Charlest described. But my problem with it is it doesn't seem to do the same thing twice.. Yeah I know, before you go to it is me..LOL the other balls do what I want them to. Maybe I just need more time with it. Maybe it is more sensitive to lane conditions than my others.
The lanes are freshly resurfaced. I will try polishing and dulling to see if I can get it to react like I think it should.

You guys are great!
Thanks
Ty

A couple of more suggetsions:
- Given that it is new and that it is highly polished, if you are playing right on the oil line (as I sometimes do), you could be hitting some spottiness of both oil and dry
OR
-the ball could be slightly erratic for your release. If that is a stacked leverage drilling, it is the most powerful and *can be* the most erratic of all the drillings.

Give it a few games to get some wear and tear on it, before you start sanding it. Use it only in practice or in leagues that don;t mean a great deal to you. I'd guess give it 15-20 games or so; that's what I'm doing to my THing to sort of stabilize it.

It's entirely possible that either that drilling, that ball or the combination are not good for your game on those oil patterns.

It could be the drilling, He said this is the 1st time he has done this drilling on one of my balls.
Oh yeah, This ball wasn't what I call highly polished. My ENG is polished to 1000. I did polish the BB to about 1200 today

Hey Ty, come up to Blvd. Bowl or Heritage Lanes, and I'll show you how to throw that thing....lol....I have one coming and it should be here in about a week all drilled up and ready to go. Ty where were you bowling? Some of these houses are only oiling when there is a league this summer and them they oil only those specific lanes and leave the rest dry. I suspect this was some of the problem. If you will come up to Blvd. or Heritage and let me know when you are coming, I'll try to meet you there and help you.

PS: I know who drilled it for you and that may be part of your problem.....lol

LOL No Brickguy, It is not my driller..
Now that i have the salt and pepper in front of me, I guess I should eat my original post.

I sanded the surface to around 400 then brought it back up to around 1000. No polish. I have to play the 10 board down and in. But man it does hit nice. I just cannot play where I usually do with my other stuff. Which is a good thing. I was needing a little weaker ball. It now fits in nicely.

Thanks to all.

Well Ty, after I tried your ball this PM, I knew it was the Bowler and not the ball.   LOL  Hey Ty.......   LOL   give me a little credit as I was the one whom kept telling you today that you couldn't play the same line as you do with the ENG and to shoot the second arrow as that is where the shot for a ball like the BB was today.

I should have mentioned just now (above) that Ty said "man does this ball hit" and by gosh he is right. After he changed lines to the second arrow, he shot a big "223.".......And yes, man does it hit.

Man I hate playing the 10 board. But it is nice to be able to.
I have been bowling for just over a year, and I have found so many lines I enjoy. But going back to the down and in is cool too I guess.

It is amazing (at least to me) how complex this easy game can get. I used to throw all my stuff up the 10, but since I have learned to let the ball do the work i have not been able to very often.
Can't wait to see how the lanes will be next month for leagues. Now they are hooking like a mad man after the resurface about 2 weeks ago.

You (Brickguy) should get on the Oil Industry league on monday nights. Fun league.
