I didn't get a response on the Lane 1 website forum so:
« on: January 22, 2006, 12:50:32 AM »
I asked a question on the Lane 1 forum about adding a balance hole to a Tsunami.  I have a Tsunami that I drilled last week.  I bought a second Tsunami from Tenpinitis hat is drilled very similar to the Tsunami I drilled.

My question is:  If both bowling balls are drilled very similar (pin under ring finger cg kicked right a touch) and neither bowling ball currently has a balance hole yet:

How much a difference is there going to be by adding a balance hole?

I know that putting a balance hole on the PAP will tame the balls reaction and one about two inches lower then the PAP will give you added flare,

but how will the ball path change on the lanes by just adding a balance?  If adding a balance hole gives me a different look, then I won't have to plug and re-drill.  I know I can also change the surface, but I wanted to see if a balance hole with the current OOB condition would make.

Hope I explained my question well enough.

Thank you.

Nicanor, You may get a quicker better response by asking this in the drilling forum. I don't know what kind of static weights are in the ball, but I doubt if a small weight hole is going to make a lot of difference. Just my opinion, it would take a hole along with a cover alteration to make a noticeable difference. Let the reader of your post know what type of reaction you are getting, & how you would like it altered. Earlier roll, longer with more snap, etc.

Thank you Sawuser.

That is the question:  Will I see a noticeable difference in ball reaction but just drilling a balance hole.  I do understand that the static weights could be different in both balls now that they are drilled but in the scenario that both balls are drilled the same and the static weights are the same, cover stock is the same (OOB) and I add a balance hole in different quadrants, will I see a noticeable difference.

I was hoping to get a responce from the Lane 1 website since they believe that the CG does make a difference as well as the MB.

Nic, what are the weights in the balls, side, finger and top..? It depends what you mean by noticable..? If you want a touch more or less backend, you can probably get that with a hole, along with better carry, if you're currently not carrying. =:^D

It depends on the amount of side weight on the two balls.... if u got over an ounce, you might want to bring it down to like 1/2... but nothing less.

I would say that the addition of a balance hole is going to result in a very minor difference in reaction and likey not even noticable.  If you look at the list of factors influencing ball reaction, weight hole / static weights are quite a ways down the line: Cover prep, pin placement, mass bias placement, weight hole / static weights.

If you really like the way your tsunami rolls, change the surface of the new one and you should be able to cover a range of conditions...otherwise go for a new layout..
