Dirty Bomb vs. Uranium Pearl
« on: October 19, 2005, 09:31:29 AM »
Ok guys, I finally drilled up both of these, and am a little boggled by what I've found. First of all, I did think the Radioactive (Activator) covers were a bit more aggressive then they are, but that isn't the problem. I love the Uranium Pearl, as it fits right below my Columbia300 Wired (which is my benchmark ball FYI). I drilled it Label, and it is just perfect. The problem I'm having is with the Dirty Bomb...I got it from JPRLane1, and kept the same drilling on it, so I wouldn't get too close of a reaction to the Uranium Pearl (pin is above bridge, CG in palm). This ball is rolling TERRIBLE...and I'm trying to figure out why. I have both the Dirty Bomb and the Uranium Pearl with the same coverstock prep (1000 Trizact with them both polished up to 2000 grit). If I try to play up the boards, then the ball is over-reacting, but the second I start to move right (I throw the left side remember), it just hits like it's 10# instead of 15#! I can't figure out why. I'm starting to think that the core doesn't match up to my game (the Super Carbide Bomb NEVER rolled good for me), but my original Carbide Bomb solid rolls EXCELLENT for me! I'm at a loss... any input is greatly appreciated. I can't really tell you guys much about my game (as it's very unorthodox), but here's a few stats from my recent CATS evaluation: 240-250 rpm and 16.1mph at 11 ft...and a VERY consistent bowler in terms of hitting my target. Thanks in advance for the help FOS...

It might just be a bad match up for you.  I think I had the same problem with a Cherry Pearl.  Originally drilled (roughly) label as recommended to me by the proshop and Lane#1.  Didn't roll bad, but just never "wow'd" me.  Different releases and cover changes didn't improve things much.  Redrilled it CG out based on recommendations from T-GOD and Clump.  I had a lot of confidence in it since it was very similar to the drilling of my favorite ball (Nighthawk M2 pearl).  The ball rolled absolutely terrible this way.  It acted like it wanted to roll and roll out early on any medium condition, but wouldn't handle any more oil than that.  More polish wouldn't get it down the lane enough, and more surface didn't help it handle heavier oil.

Are you sure about your rev rate?  I would have put you around 300.

Strider,

First of all, I thought I was about that area too, but when we did CATS in Orlando about a month ago, that's about what I got (although it did say 1430 and 880 for a few...I think the way I come around the ball, it might've been catching the thumb or something). The numbers I was giving are the estimates for the 15 or so shots that didn't give me a bad reading.

Triggerman,

I know you've never seen me bowl, and can only go by the "Urban Legend" of Big Willy Style's release (I once heard that a back-up bowler that slides on the wrong foot and a guy that bowls with his back to the pins, terrorized bowling alleys in the mid 2000's)! I have: an A+ game, an A game, a B game, a C game, then it shoots directly to F-! This is because of the way I come around the ball, I am not able to play a deep line...AT ALL! Like it can be completely scorched, and I still can't swing the ball more than, hmm....I'd say 15 boards. I just don't have the physical capabilities to put enough on the ball for it to finish strong. Sure, I can stand 40 and hit the pocket, but it'll be such a flat angle that I'll leave a sour apple 50% of the time. It sucks, and that is why I loved my Lane#1 Super Carbide soo much (and why I continue to use Lane#1). I just don't know...

Now, the worst part, is that Tuesday night after league, I was practicing some on the same pair. I shot (first three during league): 192 (Wired), 216 (Uranium pearl), 246 (Uranium pearl), 236 (Onslaught), 160 (Corner pins, then shooting at remainder 2nd shot), and then 221 (Dirty Bomb). The problem isn't that I can't score with the ball (although I did get a few breaks), it's just that I can tell it isn't rolling good. I'm thinking that I might polish it a bit higher grit (like with same stuff as my spare ball) and see how that works...but I just don't know. Anyways, thank you guys for your help, and anyone else who tosses in their two pennies...

PS...Yeah Strider, I did think I put more on the ball. A good buddy of mine (who's a very good bowler) said he was suprised that I was that high in the rev rate. He thought that it just looked that way cause the axis tilt I get (from the obvious angle it comes off my hand), and told me I was INSANE for even thinking I was around 300rpm. Hmmm...glad someone else thinks I put a bit more on the ball.
