Which lane 1 ball
« on: December 23, 2009, 11:28:23 PM »
With all the hype I have been reading on the red and blue deaths
I figured I would like to give lane 1 a try.  My question is, I have a cell
pearl and a mega friction and would like something in between the two.  Would
one of these 2 balls fit the bill.  I currently bowl on wood.  The cell pearl
just wont turn the corner but theres not enough oil for the mega.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Bill

I have the Cell pearl, Mega Friction and the Red Death.  I didn't find the Mega Friction very easy to adjust the cover.  When I threw the Red Death right out of the box, it played right over the Mega Friction.  With a couple of minor surface changes as recommended for the Red Death, the ball is much more playable on medium and medium heavy conditions.  The surface on the Red Death is easy to adjust.  So I could easily see the Red Death fitiing between the Cell pearl and the Mega Friction.

The Blue Death will fit right in there. Drill it slightly stronger than the Cell Pearl... You'll love it!!

blue is a hybrid ( not to be confused w/ inbred )
i.e. it is a solid / pearl mixture inverted one
so to compare the blue as a true pearl would not be accurate

Beans,

It's my understaning that the cell pearl is one of the strongest pearls out there. You're saying that the Blue Death is stronger??

If the Blue Death is a hybrid, which I believe it is, does the Blue Death handle oil better then the Cell pearl?  The Cell pearl is a pearl yes, but I'm not sure that the Blue Death, even though its a hybrid, fits between the Cell pearl and the Mega Friction.  I do not have the Blue Death, so I am not making any comparison.

Thats my point, the Blue Death does not like oil, so I don't understand how it will fit between the Mega Friction and the Cell pearl.  If anything, they might overlap even though the Blue Death is a hybrid.

Well my Blue Death was outhooking most at the Big Show and even managed to shoot 300 with it. (Not a FIGJAM) So in my eyes it fits between the balls..Oh..and ever hear of surface changes??

I have the red death and the ball is amazing.  It is the most special ball since the 1996 danger zone.  If you have this ball you have a significant advantage over your scratch competitor.  I would give serious consideration to this ball and then adjust the surface of the red death or another ball in your arsenal as necessary.  I have a 45 drilling angle x 4-1/2 with 40 VAL angle, no extra hole.  If you want less reaction off the spot change the drilling angle to 55.  This ball is a solid that corners like a pearl.  You will make your money back in one tournament.  Not many people know about this ball so take advantage while you can and take their money!

Since the Blue Death overlaps with the Cell Pearl (both handle medium to medium+ oil) and the Red Death overlaps with the MegaFriction, to make either "Death" fit between them, you''d either have to reduce the degree of polish/gloss on the Blue Death slightly or drill it stronger than your Cell Pearl or polish the Red Death or take it to 4000 grit or drill it weaker than your MegaFriction or some combination of them.

My suggestion depends on the condition you will be using it on, if you are mainly on a house shot I would go with the Blue Death, mine is drilled 5.25 x 3 with pin under the ring finger, almost under the bridge and a balance hole almost even with my fingers and out past my val. My driller went with this because the ball wants to go long anyways and the pin under will help it start up a little earlier and the balance hole placement will tame it down a little. It worked very well, the ball has a very nice midlane read and a powerful move off the end. If you will be seeing heavier oil or flatter patterns or would just rather stay inside in the oil I would say the Red Death with 2000 ab or so and mine drilled 5 x 3 pin in ring works very well. I think what you will find on a house shot is you would end up using the Blue Death for the entire set and the others will never leave the bag!!

Shoot a 399 with a ball and its the best thing since sliced bread.  i just shot a 300 today with the Black Raspberry.  If I used the Blue Death on this lane condition it would have matched up well. Back ends were clean, the outside was very good for swinging the ball and there was hold in the middle. The Red Death was too much ball. That would have been with both bowling balls OOB.  As Beans mentioned, I could have adjusted the surface on the Red Death to handle this condition.  I don't have a Blue Death.  I do have a Dirty Bomb hybrid and a couple of Megatons Hybrid and the cover on both these bowling ball are very tuneable.  So I do agree with Beans and CharlesT that you can adjust either coverstock to make a ball work.  But if I wanted a ball to handle more oil, I would buy the Red Death, I wouldn't buy the Blue Death and sand the polish off the ball so it would handle more oil.  If I wanted a ball to handle medium conditions and really open the lanes, I would buy the Blue Death and not buy the Red Death and polish it to match the Blue Death's surface prep.   Thats all i'm saying.

Thanks for all the input.  Currently my cell pearl is drilled pin next to
ring with the cg directly below that.  The mega is drilled 4 x 4.
Will the blue struggle with a strong drilling based on the pearls layout.
The mega just burns up because theres not enough oil.  Would it be
easier to drill the red tame or maybe struggle with getting the blue
back to the hole?

Thanks

Bill
