Lane#1 missed their chance...
« on: March 07, 2004, 04:40:12 AM »
Well, a Lane#1 using pro (Micheal Haugen Jr.) got on the show today, but chose to throw a Brunswick ball instead.  There could possibly have been some incentive money offered by Brunswick, (doubtful) but I would think a guy without a title would have used the ball/company that gave him the best chance at winning his first.  He already locked up the 8th position in the World Championships, so a few more points were not the issue.  I know he threw Visionary when he lost in the shootout against Weber a few years ago.  Did Haugen use Lane#1 on another show in the past?

Yes, if I remember correctly, Haugen used the Pro Purple in Vegas a couple of years ago.

Even guys who are not on a staff tend to typically use one brand of equipment.  Walter Ray is an exception.  Lonnie Waliczek throws a combo of Brunswick and Ebonite, but I think he's always wearing an Ebonite shirt.  It's not like Himmler throwing one brand all week, then switching to Storm for the show.  Brad Angelo stays with Brunswick even though he's not on staff...  They don't change to who's paying the biggest incentive each week.

I think all companies have some incentive for having their equipment thrown on TV.  If Lane#1 doesn't, it's just one more opportunity they're missing.  You can't tell me that AMF pays a lot because Duke, Voss, and Healy have used them on the show.  All three of them used AMF before they were purchased by Columbia.  I don't think they were spending lots of money while filing for bankruptcy.  I meant that it shouldn't have been a big factor for a guy looking for his first championship.

He's not listed on their site.  http://bbb.brunswickbowling.com/consumer/prostaff/bios/index.asp

Anyway, it was just an example.

i bowled with haughen at the us open and he uses many different balls.....he has a golden nugget and a black raspberry buzzsaw, several visionary balls, the new ebonite stinger, also a v2.he never threw a brunswick all week at the open, not to say he hasn't tried one since.
no doubt brunswick did offer him money to throw their balls.....
he is a great bowler and a wonderful person.i hope we see him on tv again soon...

Talked to Mike today. Here's his exact words on what went on this weekend with his ball use:

"I used the following balls in qualifying :
Eliminator, Killer Instinct ( pearl ), Buzzsaw c/sd, Cranberry Buzzsaw, and the Buzzsaw c/2.

In the first match, I used the Cranberry Buzzsaw, Killer Instict, and the Eliminator.

Saturday morning, I used the Ultimate Inferno and the Eliminator.

Saturday afternoon I used Ultimate Inferno.

The lanes were very different on the TV show, and I had to keep my speed slow and make sure I caught it at the bottom."

So hopefully that helps everyone wondering. He used various stuff to get there on TV and went with the last stuff he used in qualifying. Insentives or not. He'll get some Lane #1 on TV sooner or later. No big deal cause balls on TV isn't the same as in the old days when everyone went out and bought the balls they saw on TV. Yeah seeing it would be cool though!

Heatley is a Storm staffer...he made the switch a few tournaments before his first victory of the year.
