XXXL Drilling - As spare ball or normal?
« on: July 13, 2005, 02:20:44 PM »

Ok guys, looking at an XXXL to use as spare ball / when lanes are burnt.

What drilling would ya'all suggest? Drill for a straight spare ball? Or
drill as normal for using it as a burnt lane ball?

Or is there a suggested "inbetween" drilling?

I'm a righty tweener with stoker tendencies....

THanks!

It really depends on your speed, revs and tilt. For me, being a higher speed player with a very high track, a strong drill was needed and worked quite well. The ball would hook a bit on lighter shots but it was not so much that I couldn't be comfortable on my spares. If you have higher revs, slower speed, etc, you may want to go weaker in order to ensure that you aren't going to be hooking away from spares. Overall, I would say that you should drill it strong if you are more concerned with its use as a strike ball. Drill it weak if you are more concerned about using it for spares. That's just my .02

I think mine was drilled almost stacked. Doug Sterner can verify, it was his ball. I use it for both straight at spares and toast conditions and it works for me.

All great information. I'll be talking it over with my pro-shop guru soon.
I'm thinking of a weakened label drill. I'm about a 16-17mph tweener as of
late. Will need to think about this some more.....hmmmmm...

I would drill it 4x4, as it will give some hook when needed, but you can still make it roll as a spare ball when needed.  Mine is drilled that way, and it is awesome, I want another so I can drill it a bit stronger, and keep the 4x4 for spares and bone dry.
