XXXL Starburst......
« on: July 12, 2009, 05:14:36 PM »
with all the trouble i have been having this summer with very dry lanes i picked up this ball to use as my strike ball when the lanes are fried. was just looking for some feedback on this ball from people who have or had used this ball. my main question is how should i drill it up. it has a 2-3 inch pin with a top weight of 3.5 any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance for all your help.

Mine is drilled pin above bridge and cg swung out about an inch. It has worked great on short THS and at USBC in singles we had one lane that was absolutely fried. Was in about 24 out to 10 and back. Carried every pocket hit.

It's a great ball, but be aware that many plastic ball tournaments won't allow you to use 2 piece balls like the XXXL (and clear Amulet, Gemstone, clear Wolf...).  Make sure to check the rules if that is the main reason for your purchase.

I am with the aussie on this one.....mine is 4x4 stacked and it's awesome. Granted I have the original black XXXL but the Starburst is just slightly less ball than the Black. It is stronger than the Red or Crystal Diamond.

RIdiculous performance from plastic...it's just sick.

It's just an in-house non-sanctioned tournament.  Being out here in 29 Palms, CA, the base bowling center and the local bowling center put teams together and make up tourneys on the fly to keep bowlers entertained.

Even people who hate Lane #1 love this ball.

I have always contended, and still do contend, that the other companies are missing the boat by not putting a real core inside a plastic ball. The single worst thing about Lane #1 not being PBA product-registered at the moment is that if I were to bowl a regional I'd have to find another spare ball. I can deal with replacing my actual arsenal for such tournaments but I don't want to leave my XXXL behind.

Forgot to add, mine is about a 4.5x4.  Picture is in my profile.  I use mine as a strike ball frequently.  It's plastic, so even though it has a core and will flare some, polyester only hooks so much, so unless you bowl on serious dry all the time, I can't imagine the drill pattern matters a whole lot.

Actually Strider drill pattern does make a big difference. Since the ball IS plastic, if you drill the ball with a low flare layout, the ball will just roll over the oil that was put there previously. This will obviouosly decrease reaction.

If you drill the bal lwith a high flare layout, the ball will generate track flare and thus give yo8u a clean oil track with every rotation and therefore create more reaction and most importantly, drive into the pocket.

If you are using it as a spare ball, no big deal but if you like to use it on a heavier light oil shot, it means all of the difference in the world.
