My first one cracked around the ring, so I bought another one. Now this one has done the same thing...I love this ball, but really? I rarely ever have my stuff crack, and out of the 3 balls that have cracked, 2 of em have been my XXXL's...
Is there a possible explanation? I dont leave my stuff out in the cold, and I clean it every few weeks. What gives?

I will agree. I have a Maxim and have been using it for about 3 years. My ring finger hole is pretty much destroyed. The bottom of the grip isn't glued to anything. I am waiting for it to come out, but can't bring myself to A) get it plugged and fixed or B) buy a new spare ball.

ive had my starburst since it come out use it nightly no craking issue usually if it cracks around fingers and you use grips could be the glue used or the pro shop is not sanding the sharp edges good enough before they put grips in.

agree with revlefty...need to bevel the finger holes b4 the inserts go in.

and slow the drill bit down, plastic especially are prone to heat problems, a fast drill bit and fast cutting leads to undue heat and pressure, coule that with people tending to throw their plastic hard at spares, its just asking for a crack
bevel around the fingers will help with this as has been said, any hole in the ball should be beveled

I bought the Clear Diamond and the Starburst as soon as they became available. Have grips in both balls. Use the Clear twice a week. Use the Starburst a couple times a month. Still have both balls. No cracks. Holes were beveled prior to installing grips. Glue was used sparingly. Drill speed was slow and a sharp bit was used.

I've had customers that use plastic for spares and hit the holes when they flatten the ball out have to replace their balls every 3-4 months from cracking.
I think because the US Government has made the production of plastic bowling balls harder in the US that 75% of the plastic sold now is imported from Asian companies. The plastic seems harder and less plyable than the old White Dots,Maxims and Target Zones thus creating more cracking problems...
I was told by Bill Calhoon (Ebonite Rep) that the US has made ball manufacturers cut their plastic production 5% per year until all plastic balls are made overseas because of pollution problems..
I just think the polyesther being used is much harder now and is more brittle. The super glue reaction problem is 100% true as well. Brunswicks Powercoil 18 has had issues with Super Glue reactions. How many people had PK18 spiderweb around the finger holes with grips????
Anyways.....
Chrispy,
Be sure to contact Lane#1 with this issue. I am sure it will be handled accordingly

You might be on to something there. I don't use inserts, so no super glue, and I cracked out the bridge on my Red XXXL after a few months. Since plugging and re drilling the fingers, I haven't had any problems. Maybe the plug material is less brittle than the newer polyester?

I went through two Starbursts. Both replaced by Lane #1.
Both just above the finger grips.
The last replacement took over a month, but that didn't bother me. I had to settle on a 14 lb 11 oz ball (I throw 14 lb) because he didn't have that weight available to replace with. It was a blem. The cover wasn't perfectly smooth and had a raised portion that's hard to notice.
All in all I don't care to be honest. I use it for a spare ball and was happy to get it replaced to begin with.
Anyhow, blem ball #3 has been holding up nice. I told the driller to bevel the finger holes, and apply the glue below the cover stock and sparingly up near the cover stock part of the ball.
Hope it helps yours survive.
My Blue Dot before I had these XXXL's had small chips wearing away around both finger holes and the thumb. It was always useable though regardless. So much for the 'strongest' cover on the market. For balls that get thrown into the most violent part of the lanes (corners), they ought to be making them more durable, heh.

Same here. I had a SuperNova lose a giant chunk and the resin in the area was plasticy and brittle. Very poor quality materials. My BuzzBomb had a chunk come off the weighthole and has hairline cracks near the pin.
I really like Lane #1, but after having 3 balls get damaged under normal conditions, I've been contemplating LaneMasters equipment going forward.
