I'd like a few opinions from anyone throwing a Hornet on burnt up synthetics. I've run into quite a few instances where after a couple games throwing a lightly scuffed Black Pearl that my move to a polished Black Pearl Reactive with a longer type of drilling isn't enough of a change. The reaction looks a lot better from a length perspective but if the ball finds a dry spot it'll jump on me a bit to early. I've seen the same with a WCPP.

The next logical move down is the Buzz (or a polished Terminator Rebellion), not the Hornet. The Hornet is a move down from the Buzz. There's a significant space between the Buzz and the Hornet, not enough for another ball, though.

The Hornet is a light oil or drier lanes ball. It is a step up from plastic. Since it has a real core, different drillings can change the reaction and utility.

I have a BPR, Buzz and Hornet in my 6-ball bag (along with an Black Diamond, Xtreme Damage, and a Columbia White Dot). The BPR to Buzz to Hornet fills all of the natural steps from strong core polished pearl reactive to medium core polished pearl reactive to medium core hard surface, polished pearl reactive.

The Hornet is an ideal ball for a burnt track, allowing one to roll practically into the teeth of the dry. The two-piece core provides some recovery while the harder shell provides some hold inside the burn.

If I could only afford one ball to combat the burn, I''''d choose the Hornet but, realize the move from the BPR to the Hornet is a rather large jump in core strength and ball surface reaction.

Thanks. I already have a Hornet but have been hesitant to put any holes in it just yet. Yeah, I know, why have the ball but not be able to throw it especially when I get on some conditions where I could use it? I also have a Spit Fire with a weaker drilling but I don't throw it often.

I agree with both of you on ball choices but was looking more on the area of if I should expect the Hornet to skate on synthetics and be less predictable as compared to wood lanes or if those concerns are unfounded.

Once synthetics are dry enough to use a Hornet, it makes little difference how "predictable" a pearl will be. If there's carrydown, that's makes almost any ball that can clear the heads unpredictable. So I think you're worrying about the wrong thing here. If there's no carrydown and it's still unpredictable, you used too flippy a drilling and/or there's still too much oil to use it properly.

As has been said, just because your BPR is "not enough of change" does not mean the Hornet is the right ball.

That said, in virtually every case when I have delayed drilling a ball, I have regretted it, once I started using it. Unless you're buying a duplicate of a ball you love for future use, don't buy a ball you can't use now. If you need it, buy it. If you buy it, drill it. if you dont need it, sell it.
