Yup - just a bet at ebay out of boredom, and I end up with a bowling ball!

Did not have a real need for this piece, but noone else wanted it, so I got a NIB Counter Strike, even with decent specs, and at a price of half of a NIB Slingshot. Not bad, though, but I am uncertain what to do with it (if I just do not stash it away).

What I got:

Gross WT: 15-2
Top WT: 3 oz
Pin Location: 2 3/4

Does anyone have experience with this ball? Does it really handle much oil? I have rather the impression that it is a slightly more arcing ball in the LM Strike line, but not a true oiler? The reviews are a bit controversial,  too...

My idea (so far) is to use it for mediums, using my favorite layout (pin 4.5" from PAP, if possible above the fingers, CG stacked) and maybe hit the OOB ball with some Trizact compound to add a bit of shine and length through the heads?

"Does anyone have experience with this ball? "

Of course I do.

With the stock surface, it needs medium-light to medium oil in the heads and the midlane to operate effectively. You can feel the particles in the surface with the stock finish. I took it to P3000 grit + a light polish (now I could barely feel the particles) , put the pin over the ring finger (4.75" pin to PAP), to give it a little more backend, as this is a very smooth piece.

If you put the pin below the bridge area and left the stock surface, you'd need a higher than average ball speed and/or some tilt AND rotation to your release to get an effective hit from this ball, in my opinion.

I wouldn't use too long a pin-PAP distance as the RG differential is only .040. You do want to retaing a good percentage of that.

Thomas, with your and my ball speed, I think pin over the level of the bridge (not necessarily over the bridge itself) and possibly a light shine would be best.

Recently I found it very useful on some Anvillanes at which center they have started putting out true medium oil. The ball is/remains very controlled and hits Lanemasters hard, carrying a lot of light hits.
If you slow up a bit, the backend gets harder and more abrupt.  Even I could through it through the breakpoint with the slightly shine I have on this ball, if I used too much speed. I'd suggest trying it with the stock surface first, then adjusting it as needs be,

Oh, it is a particle pearl, and while I got it to handle medium to almost medium heavy oil, in general, even with a dull finish, I don't think it will handle true  medium-heavy oil or heavier. That said, I find it to be fairly flexible, given the particles in the ball. they are not the super hard diamonds or carbons that Lanemasters started to use. Their ability to stick above the surface of the resin can be esily manipulated with Scotch Brite pads.

I think you have a possibly very good ball on your hands.

Many thanks, Jeff, for taking the time and writring this thorough reply. It confirms my expectations about this piece - and what made me keen on it is the fact that it is a light load particle piece, with a higher RG and not an uber-RG differential. Unfortunately I have only seen one Counter Strike in action so far (during a tournament last year), and the ball looked rather smooth and mellow. What makes me a bit sceptical is the fact that it is one of LM's "low budget" filler balls - I just hope that it lives up to the good quality I know from this company.

I'll discuss options with my ball driller, anyway, but I see potential for this piece - totally agree with you. Could be that I end up with the pin in my ring finger, like my Blackout, so that the CS can hook a bit more due to the better/earlier traction and higher differential.

:)

Thomas,

It CAN be rather smooth and even. As I suggested, at least drill the ball with the pin up (at or just above the level of the bride). Then adjust the cover as needs be. If you choose to use a pin down drilling, then I think you will have to adjust the cover to make it a finer surface or even add some polish. With the pin up you should have more surface choices.

Yup - agreed. I rarely use pin down setups, due to my lower speed. I just hope that TW and pin distance allow a high pin. But I will keep things rather simple.

Ball arrived yesterday - two surprises: one is the looks. From the press pics I expected a rather ugly orb in olive drab and silver, but in real life (or at least my specimen) could even be called pretty. A dark forest green - "olive" with some fantasy, but almost blu-ish. and the "white" rather looks like ivory, or a bleak gold.

On the other side, I am surprised how shiny the 1.000 grit OOB finish is. There are sanding lines, but overall the ball is rather on the shiny side of sheen - I guess I will keep it that way when it is punched up to see how it behaves. With that surface, it should go well through the heads. And, yes, you can feel the particle additive "sticking" out of the surface like tiny nails or spikes.

Promising!

That's normal for any LM ball finished OOB with a white scotch-brite pad.  My LM Buzz Attack has the same factory finish is the same.  Actually pretty easy to reproduce with a white pad.

Another ball I'd never call good looking.
Mine arrived more dull looking, like my Buzz Attack. The CS seemed more even reacting than my BA which was smoother out of the box. I think the CS's core is stronger than the BA, but it's hard to judge, heck, almost impossible, as both coverstocks and cores are different. So you can only compare ball to ball.
