Best LM Ball for Heavy Oil?
« on: June 20, 2009, 07:59:46 AM »
Looking for a heavy oil ball that's also durable, so I figure I'd look into Lanemasters. Are the Terminator & Dynamic Power the main options or are there other LM balls I should look into?

Get you a Black Pearl... Hands down the best ball for long oil! My black Pearl was 3-4 boards stronger than my Terminator with the same layout. Also the Black Pearl will last a thousand games because those Particles are so durn tough.

Both balls u mentioned though will handle all the oil you can throw at them so its mainly a color preference at this point. Hope this helps, John

The Dynamic Power is probably their ball that handles the most oil.

The Terminator can handle heavy oil but it comes with as light shine, called a sheen finish. To handle heavy oil, you really need to remove that shine. I'd start with 600 grit.

The Conqueror is a limited run ball that can handle a lot of oil. For all purpose use, it also comes with a sheen finish. Sanding to heavy oil normal of 600 or 800 grit will allow it handle a lot of oil.

That's the surface I have on my BPP.Works very well for me on long flat heavy patterns.

I would have to agree with Jeff, the Dynamic Power is a very adequate ball designed for the heavier oiling patterns.  The first one I drilled-up was way to strong and I got rid of it(it was drilled 60x3 3/8x65).  The second one I kept, it came with a 3 7/8 pin and I stacked it with the pin about an 1" above the ring finger and it is still condition specific, it definitely needs oil to be effective.

Other Lane Masters/Legends balls which I believe are excellent for the heavier stuff would be: The Terminator with the finish knocked down to 600/800 grit, definitely the Conquerer(I have two I don't even use anymore for lack of oil), the NS2 for me was oil hungry as was the Big Bang.

I am picking up two new Black Diamonds next thursday at Kent's booth at Nationals, this ball should be an oiler as well, considering it utilizes the Dynasty weight block used in the Black Pearls as well as using Diamond Particles(low-load I believe).

Carlos,

You have several options within the Lane Masters/Legends line:

Dynamic Power: LM's lowest RG particle ball: Arc reaction. Available.

Black Pearl (Particle): Low particle load gets the ball down the lane, particle pearl still reads midlane, and high differential supports more of a snap reaction on the back end. Great ball for making the nationals shot or Shark pattern look like what you are accustomed to on a higher volume house shot. Available.

Black Diamond: Coming out new this summer, this will be a medium load diamond particle solid ball with a relatively high differential. Similar to the Black Pearl (particle), only more.

Terminator: Medium load particle blend. Medium differential. Between the Dynamic Power and Black Pearl/Black Diamond in reaction. Still available but discontinued.

Conquerer: Medium load particle but with decent length. Available due to another production run earlier this year without the limited edition numbering. Limited availability.

World Class Particle Pearl: Light load but versatile cover works well on wet conditions with burgundy, green or gray pad. This is one of my most versatile balls but I leave it polished and go to it on conditions where my Big Bang and Conquerer read too early. Discontinued but still available.

Older balls that may be available used:

New Standard 2 (NS2): Heavy load particle.
World Class (Particle): Medium load particle.
Big Bang: Medium load particle. Still available at BowlingBallMall.com
Yeah Baby: Heavy load particle.
Guaranteed: Heavy load particle.
Big Kahuna: Medium load particle.
Kong: Medium load particle.
AP2: Medium load particle.

I had an excellent look at USBC Nationals 2009 Las Vegas with my pin-up Big Bang and almost as good of a look with my pin-down Conquerer. Several of my teammates/acquaintances use the Dynamic Power with excellent results on heavy patterns including medium-heavy to heavy THS.

I agree with each of the previous posters: JDD, charlest, EFFEN10, and PatP regarding their perspectives.

Respectfully,

Jim

I would just like to add my experience with the black pearl.

first off you would need to dull this ball to get the polish off and possibly go even more dull then that to get the ball into an early enough roll. this ball for me works when playing straight thru the oil but even then id consider it a ball able to handle medium TO medium/heavy... it goes far too long to work on heavier patterns but if you had enough forward roll and a high enough rev rate i bet its a viable option.

What I have learned with my Black Diamond is if you have medium speed it would probably be a great ball for oil.  The ball would not quit once it made the turn at the break point.

If you are not in a rush to get a ball, I would wait on the Black Diamond. If you need a ball now get the original Conquerer (bowling ball mall has some)or
get the Black Pearl and take the shine off it. JMO,Ken

How long are you talking about waiting? If I can't get a Black Diamond within the next 3 weeks, then I mine as well go ahead and pick up a Dynamic Power!

So you think it's a possibility that I could order a 16 pound Black Diamond the 1st week of July? The reason for my impatients is that I want a chance to throw my heavy oiler by the time we get to the Shark pattern in my PBA X league, which will be in about 3 weeks. Come the fall I'll be shooting a medium to medium/heavy house shot, but the bulk of are local tournements carry extremely high volumes of oil as well. A good heavy oil ball is a must have if you intend on cashing around these parts. As well as the shot put out for are Thursday night pot games is roughly 49 feet of oil, so you can see my dilemma.

call lanemasters direct, ask to speak to teresa c and she can pinpoint a better guesstimate of when the 16lb.ers will be available. She told me that the production schedule goes as follows 15 lb.ers, 16lb.ers then 14lb.ers. I am waiting on a 14 lb.er and I was told 2nd week of july. Ken

The Kong is a good ball for heavy oil. That was what I thought and I was on Lane Masters pro staff, until last Sept. when they dropped product registration with the PBA. The original Black Pearl did well in the oil too. I do have a used Kong I would be willing to part with since I can't use it in the PBA any more. It's a 15 lber though.
