Help with big bang
« on: September 12, 2006, 11:03:37 AM »
I really like my big bang.  It carries above average in every catergory but a half pocket shot.  It likes to leave a solid ten pin when I come in a fraction late.  Can a weight hole be drilled to make it a touch more angular?  I know LL are really meant to be angular but I thought I would ask.  I don't want more hook just a slightly different shape.

Thanks

George

I can do that but my normal release already is a high axis tilt release.  Any higher and all of my balls high a higher chance of over under.  No matter what line you play you can still end up with this shot.  All I want to know is if a weight hole can be make it more angular.

Thanks

gfh2a, I'm not real familiar with their equipment, but according to the drill sheet, a small hole on the PAP should give you that little extra.

weight holes usually take out side and make a ball roll sooner.... so no... a weight hole will not make a ball more angular.

I would slightly polish the ball. The ball comes with a sheen surface, polish will help it to conserve energy and jump a little more on the dry backend.

I would consult with Galen Gentry at Legends for that "tweaking" of your ball's reaction; quite often, you can achieve what you want with a coverstock adjustment OR and cover adjustment and a properly located & sized balance hole. Be prepared to provide him with details on the ball (layout & cover finish), your style (PAP, ball speed, etc) and the conditions that you're rolling on ... the more info that you can provide, the better he'll be able to assist you.
If you email him with as much of that info (plus your phone number for him to call you back)and then call him about it, he can look at that email and have the info right in front of him as he speaks with you.
Contact info is:
galen@lanemasters.com  and 1-888-526-3645 (they open a 8 AM Pacific time); if he's not there or unavailable, leave a voice mail and your contact info.

Good luck !!!

Generally weight holes 2" inside or above your PAP are considered to be flare reducing weight hole, but I think you have to take a sizeable chunk out for it to affect the core. In a similar manner wt holes 2 1/2" - 3" below or beyond your PAP are considered to be flare increasing. They will make your ball flare earlier for more overall hook and smoother hook.

Probably a safer thing to do is to sand your ball finer. Stock is around 800 grit. Trying 1200 grit will increase length and decerease backend both slightly. It may be enough to make you happy.

Half pocket hits are, like someone already implied, your job to fix with line and/or hand adjustments. Any adjustments to the ball will make it react differently, handle oil differently, arc/flip differently. You may not like that change at all. Irronically, when I first got Legends first "power" balls, the New Standard and the Yeah Baby!, their strength was carrying half pocket hits, like I previously had never carried nearly as well.

I agree completely.  Sanding to 1200 is a good bet. Small adjustments is the key.  I would start at 1200 as Charlest recommends, then make small adjustments from there.  I would bet, though that 1200 will work well.

Weight holes on or beyond the PAP make the ball roll sooner because they change the shape of the core and increase the differential. That increase the flare and makes the ball hook earlier. Changed side and top weights have a significantly less effect on the ball reaction than changes to the dynamics of the core.

Weight holes 2" inside or above the PAP are flare reducing weight holes and HAVE THE POTENTIAL to make the ball skid further because of the reduced differential and the reduced flare. The ball flares later and, thus th eball goes longer before hooking. These will also reduce side weight and top weight BUT the ball won't roll earlier, because changes to the dynamics of the core outweight changes to side and top weights.

1200, huh ??? Would a session on TRACK Clean N Sheen accomplish that ??? I recently took my WC down from 2000 abralon to around 1200 with it and it really made a difference in the reaction ... a bit more push, but MORE snap on the backends !!!

1200 sanded or using Ebonite's Matte finish leaves the ball dull.

Clean and SHeen leaves, approximately, a 1000 grit copound finish, a very light polish on the ball. The difference between this and 1200 dull is significant, with respect to a ball's reaction.

Clean and Smooth

Bowler's Paradise is one of my favorite places for cleaners and polishes; they have a great selection, PLUS descriptions plus very good (if not the best) prices.
