Buzz vs. Hornet
« on: June 11, 2007, 04:24:19 AM »
I've thrown the Hornet, but have not thrown the Buzz.

I've seen the numbers on both, and they are extremely close. So what is the difference between the two, and why would LM come out with two balls so very similar in numbers and amount of "push" downlane?

Can anybody give me an idea of what's uup?

The Hornet should be longer through the heads.

According to what Fred Borden said at the Legends University I went to, both cover similar amount of boards.  It seems as if it depends on the angle you want.  He said the Hornet was a much smoother reaction compared to the Buzz which was longer

Thanks for your replies. Did a little more researching and realized, this topic has basically already been covered by Charlest and Laybzz, on earlier posts.

Sorry if I'm a little late on the take!

No prob, "JJ" ... yeah, that HD cover of the HORNET takes it longer than the BUZZ (although it STILL "backends"); both have the low flare core ... so if the layouts are the same for both, the BUZZ will be a bit stronger while the HORNET will turn hard later.

JJ,

Remember that the numbers refer ONLY to the core. Many ball lines by several different manufacturers use the identical core and different coverstocks to achieve a wide variety of ball reactions. Primary ones are the Brunswick BVP line (see how different the Punisher and the Mammoth are.) and the Dyno-Thane Vendetta line (Vendetta pearl vs the Vendetta soldi particle).

The Buzz and the Hornet are nto even that far apart, with the Hornet clearing the heads and having less backend than the Buzz. They're almost but not quite GOTO complements.

Now if Legends will only get a solid to complement the Hornet: even arc-ing  and mild backend. Then we'd really be in business.

BTM must be way off on these two balls.  They give great marks for the BUZZ on med and heavy oil.  They give bad marks on med and heavy oil for the Hornet.  They also go on to say that the Hornet is a true dry lane ball and is not even meant for med patterns.

So how in the world can these two balls be close to each other in reaction?

Try a ball comparison on the LEGENDS web site ... play with the input parameters and see the difference:

I like and repsect BTM for the incredible work they do, but everyone is entitled to a few hic-coughs now and again. Yes, I can't see the Buzz getting 7s and 8s for heavy oil.

The Hornet, depending on drill and hand, can handle some degree of mediums. Balls will overlap to some degree onto other ranges of applied oil amounts. Again, "Hand", tilt, ball speed, etc. all come into play.

I used my Hornet once on a short oil pattern with a relatively heavy oil amount. Due to the amount on a short distance it would probably be considered a "medium"oil pattern. Due to the long dryish backend, my Hornet mad e a stron move at the back. That said, I wouldn't even attempt to use it on what I'd believe were a true meidum oil pattern. There are plenty of balls designed for that.

It is a great light oil ball.
