I agree with X59.
The SS with the stock surface will skid and hook on less oil than the BBs sanded at all (2000 grit and 800 grit). That surface is meant for much more oil. I'd bet that was exactly the reason.
Lm/L coverstocks are fairly strong; sanding the polish off them makes then smoother BUT requires more oil, how much more depends on the ball and the bowler's release and ball speed and all those factors.
On the same lane surface and oil pattern, if the SS is working well, then the BB should be saved for higher amounts of oil, like other centers or for tournaments. Shame you got rid of them. I would have just polished them a little.
Oh, and remember, this has nothing to do with the drilling. Surface rules; drillings tweak the reaction. It's roughly a 70/30 ratio. If the type of surface and the finish are not even close, then no drilling will help.
