Sting - what happened?
« on: March 23, 2008, 03:37:33 AM »
I've been using Legends Balls for years and have had great success with them.  I picked up the Sting in the fall and had nothing but trouble with it.  I have the pin drilled above ring finger and cg around 45 degrees.  This ball either slides or overhooks.  I contacted Galen and he suggested polishing it or re-plugging it.  Can others who have this ball, tell me what they think of it?  I went back to my Terminator, Big R Bang and Yeah Baby.  I'm shooting lights out with the Terminator, even after 400 + games, it's my go to ball. For whatever reason, I can play outside with the legends balls a lot longer, than other companies.  They seem to hold the line better and have a truer shot. I was thinking about getting something else, Black Pearl or WCPP and was hoping the Sting would do it.

I'm primarily a down and in player, 16 mph, pap 5 5/8 with 5/8's averaging in the 220 range. I like to hit around 5 - 8 board and play straight up all day and do so, for most of the time.

I appreciate your replies.

Thanks...

The Siing is, for a solid particle, a real skid/flip ball, because of its mild flare and polished cover. I believe you aggravated that tendency by putting the pin up too high and by using it on too much oil with that pin position.

So either redrill it with a lower pin or scuff the surface to make its reaction more even and less flippy. Try some surface first, like a light grey pad, removing most of the shine, BUT just LIGHTLY hazing the surface. You can always re-drill, if that does not give you enough change.

This ball has so much hitting power when it is drilled right and used on the right amount of oil, it's downright spooky.

A stroker friend has one and it has raised his average more thana few pins; so much so that he got its companion for lighter oil, the Buzz.

i had the same problem with both the buzz and the sting.. the sting was better of the 2 but still was way over under. for some reason those balls just do not work for me.. i can never tell where the breakpoint is going to be. mine was drilled pin below my fingers and cg out about 1 3/4''. i tried scuffing it and redrilling it but nothing has worked to where it is like all my other legends balls.

I will gladly take it off your hands, if you get tired of messing with it!

These balls are, to quote Charlest, "spooky"s strong! Sometimes you just can't use a conventional release to get their true potential out of them.

Just my 2 cents. But let me know.....

I've experienced the same issue in the past, and found when that is occuring, it's normally one of two reason.  1st, with that particular ball, it may not match to you comfort area.  Try playing straight up 10 with it, or maybe trying the outside around 4 and see if you find more consistent result.  I moved inside a couple boards further than I normally play before, and found a ball I disliked to instantly become a favorite.

A second possibility, it maybe your just using it on the wrong condition.  Most people don't see enough oil to see the true strength of the terminator.  If by chance your one of the rare ones who does, there may simple be too much oil out there for the sting.
