Grit Finish on Yeah Baby
« on: July 05, 2012, 03:55:00 PM »
In terms of "Grit" finish, what would be the Yeah Baby at in "Out Of Box Condition?"  In "Matte" finish, is this around 600 to 800 grit?

Nope. If I had to guess at the final surface, I'd say it was in the neighborhood of 2200-2400 grit Abralon.

The original particle balls had a unique, hard to replicate finish.
First they sanded them and finished them with the EQUIVALENT of Scotch-Brite Light grey pad which is 800 grit US/CAMI grade, roughly equivalent to P1600 grit FEPA (Abralon pads use FEPA grading).
(Remember these are diamond particles that can only be modified from the tsock 800 CAMI/1600 FEPA grit level, by diamond sanding pads.)
Then they used their Factory Finish polish to put an extra does of polish on the ball, really burned in (HIGH, HIGH gloss). This is considered a non-abrasive polish.

Then they again took a light grey pad and lightly, by hand rubbed about 50% of the shine off the ball.

This is about as close as I can get to the finish they applied at the factory.

I'd be less concerned about the factory finish than what finish would work for you

Had a Yeah Baby also. It's a great ball.  My brother has it now. He used and had to have it so I let him buy it from me. I will be passing the OOB info to him.

Charlest,  would this apply for my New Standard also? I would like to put the OOB finish back on it but don't really know what to tell my PRO SHOP. Original finish is stated as Sheen.

Here are some of the Lane Masters/legends finish notes I've accumulated over the years:

Black Pearl. Wet sand with 320, 400, 600 and then 800 grit paper. Polish with High gloss polish and then scuff lightly with the white pad.

Most of the models that have "Sheen" as their final finish have the super high gloss polish applied with their Legends Factory Finish polish (non-abrasive) on top of the 800 grit sanding. Then they have a "hazing" with another light grey (800 grit) nylon pad. BUT after that last hazing, you can still see the polish underneath. The result is closer to, roughly equivalent to a 1500 grit matte finish, than an 800 grit total sanding. It's actually kind of tricky to arrive at.

Their polished balls (WCR, BRB, Hornet, Buzz, etc) eliminate that final "hazing".

Conquerer: Wet sand with 320, 400, burn in a good coat of LM factory finish polish, 1000 white pad wet = OOB

Hornet: 800-grit, then polish

Black Pearl: Also listed as maroon pad, grey pad, then a "buttload" of factory finish polish

Black Pearl according to Galen: 320, 400, 800, LM factory finish polish, then white pad

Want particles to react a little sooner than box?
Try 2000-grit abralon (more controllable and even reacting).
4000-grit = a little longer and even smoother (slightly longer than OOB)

As far as I know, yes. Both balls had the same stock surface finish.
The look was sheen, but how it got there is the sequence I described above.

Any good bowling ball cleaner should work.

During bowling: Valentino's Remedy, Zapp-It, Knock-Out, Neo-Tac's Liquid Nitro, Ultimate's Rejuvenator, Tac-up.

After bowling: Hook-It, Clean and Dull, Lanemasters cleaner.

Motiv Scuff and cleans works for me but then I have no hand and can get away with it.
