Help With BK Layout
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:48:33 AM »
Hi,
I was given a used Big Kahuna that I'd like to drill up. Presently, the pin is above the fingers about 1/2 an inch. The span is a little over 4". The ball looks to have a 2 and 7/8 pin. I do not know the top weight. I will be using this ball on a medium-heavy house shot (synthetic lanes) that in my opinion are a bit flatter and longer than the typical house shot. I imagine I will need to set the ball up to roll early on this condition but I still need some finish. See my profile for my specs. Any thoughts?

I have a Buzz with the pin about an inch to the right of the fingers drilled stacked with an x hole on the PAP. This ball is a solid arc for me. I've bowled on synthetic and wood, wet and dry, and it is always a constant arc. Of course, the arc starts later on wet but it is still an even arc. I am trying different surfaces to give me a little back end bump. I mention this to offer more information on my  personal experience with Lanemasters equipment and drillings for me.

I have enjoyed and learned a great deal on BallReviews and appreciate all of you who contribute.
Thanks, Spoon

Here's my 2 cents, FWIW:

given your specs, tilt, revs, ball speed, and the condition on which you want to use the BK (a ball I really, really like) medium-medium heavy and given the ball's highish RG and low RG differential, I'd say you're right about putting the pin below the bridge area. In fact, I'd place no higher than ring finger height, maybe 4" from your PAP (no further), and place the CG about 3" from your PAP.

(Your natural track, tilt and rotation tends to add length to most balls; that's why I'm suggesting the strong pin and CG positions. That CG position will probably need a weight hole. I'm thinking it should be 6 - 6 3/4" from grip center.)

Any idea if the previous user modified the surface?

The stock surface is almost ideal for me on medium oil and longer mediums, almost to medium-heavy oil. You may need to manipulate the surface to insure it covers "true" medium-heavy" oil patterns.

Just some random thoughts. Good luck.

Thank you charlest. Your 2 cents are invaluable.
The previous user only used the ball for less than 10 games. He didn't modify the surface in any way.
(BTW, The Buzz taken to 1000 abralon is now somewhat of a hook monster.)
Thanks again, I'm taking the BK over to the pro-shop tomorrow.

Most of these covers, especially the ones they choose to polish (I refer specifically to the Masterpiece and probably to the new Terminator,), can be incredibly strong, when dull slightly or a lot. 1000 grit is fairly strong, seeing as how that 4000 grit is the approximate equivalent to a high gloss polish (with equivalent steps up in evennesss and oil handling).

Charlest is dead nuts on again I have two pin up bk's and a pin down bk i think 4- 4 1/4 pin to pap below finger line and 3 - 3 1/4 cg to pap will do the trick. 1000-1200 on this cover is plenty of surface since it has amedium particle load, if you polish use a gritless polish on top the surface below.

I will let you guess since i have three which legends ball is my fav

I was shocked at the huge difference taking the Buzz to 1000 grit made as I had previously read that the Terminator was at 800 grit and the factory polish took it to about 1400 . I assumed that preparation by the factory to be similar on the Buzz.

Now this would make total sense out of what I have seen. Does this mean that if I took the Buzz to 2000 grit it would still have more oil handling ability than out of the box condition?

The high gloss preparation was probably similar, but I doubt it was 1400 grit. I don't know what it might be, but  someone should ask Lanemasters. I suspect 800 grit plus lots of pressure and time, using their polish.

I could ALMOST guarantee it. If you have a spinner, it would be a beneficial experiment, IF you could return the ball to the finish you need.

From a previous thread:

"FYI, "factory grit" of both the Big Bang and the Terminator is 800 grit (gray scotchbrite pad); the BB is left that way for sale at OOB Sheen, and the Terminator is polished with their Factory Finish polish, which takes the ball up to 1500-1800 grit. BTW, this is not an assumption on my part, this info is directly from "DA Man" at Legends, Galen Gentry".

All their balls with a "Sheen" finish are highly polsihed then hit with a light grey (800 grit) nylon pad. The way they are "hit" leaves a lot of that polish showing through the 800 grit "scratches". It is not actually a full 800 grit "sanding". This gives them that odd, hard to replicate factory finish.

I have sanded several of their "Sheen" finished balls with a few games on them with 1000 grit sandpaper thoroughyl to get what I regard as a true full 100 grit smooth finish and gotten much earlier rolls than the stock one.

So I personally try to be very cautious before saying that the balls have an 800 grit finish on them because based on several experiments, their finish does not quite work out that way. That is my personal experience; others may find different results.

Did he explain how this number was arrived at?
(I don't doubt it; too many other balls from other companies, Storm, Roto-Grip, Track, Columbia, have roughly the equivalent shine, appearance. So I assume that is the correct range.)

I'll clarify ... the 800 gray pad is the final grit adjustment, but the previous steps are:
- 400 wet sand
- 800 wet sand
- gray pad
- application of polish
- 800 wet sand, and THEN
- the final gray pad step
Again, this is what I was told by Mr Gentry and how they achieve that "Sheen" finish; any questions regarding this should be directed to him via his email at galen@lanemasters.com   or  call him at 1-888-526-3645
Sorry if I've caused any confusion.

I was told a similar procedure by Jonny Jones of Lanemasters; the difference was they went from the polish to the 800 grit light grey pad. My "Sheen" balls seem to corroborate this process, as a lot of shine comes through the nylon pads lines. He is high up in the corporate structure of Lanemasters; this conversation took place just before Galen arrived there to take up his current duties.

Charlest,
I spoke to Galen today about this subject ... and apparently we are both right because what Johnny told was correct for what they produced back then ... and what Galen told me is a bit more current to what they are doing now; currently, it really depends upon which ball is being referred to ...

Damn! That's not right of them.

I just got a new Kong and that ball is VERY shiny with "apparently" some 800 grit scratch marks ffom a light grey nylon pad, but it looks like it should go long.

I also order a new Yeah Baby!. Let's see how it comes AND when it was produced.
It's Galen's 800 grit, it should full sanded 800 grit. If it's Jonnie's 800 grit, it should look like my old one and the new Kong I  just got,

Any idea of the cut-off date for the change in surface procedure?

I still have one of my World Class's in stock box surface; have to go downstairs and eye-ball it out. Wish they'd leave well enough alone.
