Lanemasters Kong
« on: August 24, 2009, 06:30:41 AM »
Recently came across a Kong that was drilled once, and plugged. Since I'm into LM/Legends equipment, I thought I'd give it for a spin. Any "best" layouts for this ball? The only thing I can gather is its supposed to be long and strong. I'd like it for lighter oil, unless its not made for that. Surface adjustments? thanks!

from what I can gather the kong was a particle solid and meant for medium-heavy conditions.

the kong is not in any way, shape or form a light oil ball. sure you could drill it really long without much backend but it would be a waste of the ball. i found that it was great on the medium oil, however i did not have it drilled for its maximum potential. using the kong boosted my average from about 180 too about 200. i loved and was one of my favourite balls. please drill it for at least medium oil if u gna drill it and i promise you, you will not regret it.
and you are right, its long and strong.

The problem with the Kong is there were two of them. At one point in the production of them, they used a bad or wrong batch of the coverstock. It may have been as simple as one batch contained the particles and the next batch did not. I don't really know. Whatever the problem was, there were 2 distinct Kongs and I cannot tell you how to tell them apart except by their reaction.

A friend told me, back 4 years ago when it first came out, that his Kong could only handle medium light oil. I was heavily "into" Lanemasters balls back then. So I bought one because I found it hard to believe him, given the review in BTM, a medium-heavy to heavy oil ball. I drilled it relatively strong, 4x4, and found the same thing he did: it just couldn't handle even true medium oil. On medium-light oil, it was fantastic. However, once the head oil was depleted, you had to put it away. You couldn't get deeper, because it couldn't make the turn. It just burnt up in the heads.

I sold mine because of its limited usability. If you got one that handles medium-heavy oil, it's a keeper!!!

So either way I should drill it strong? If its one of the bad batches for med-light oil, it'll still be strong for mediums. If its one of the better batches, it'll be good for medium-heavy?

i have 2 kongs drilled totally different ways and i get two totally different reactions. one is as people say "long and strong". its drill pin above bridge and cg below bridge. BUT, my other kong IS FOR LIGHTER CONDITIONS! IN FACT ITS A STEP ABOVE MY HORNET AND THATS IT!! its drilled modified rico. pin in palm but an inch above center line and cg kicked straight over from the center line. cg becomes my PAP and remains spinning from that point the whole time. very smooth slight arc with a harder backend arc. this is my 299 ball! very controllable for a medium - high rev player like myself.

oh yea the surface is a gray scotch brite pad with some Valentinos resurrection on the pad. so yea its possible to use it as a lighter oil ball. and yes does it ever destroy the pins even with this weaker drill pattern on it.

Hey Zone,
would you say you got a "bad" batch and a good batch? The one you drilled to go long strong as a good batch, and the lighter oil one as a bad batch? Or just that the two different drillings affected them entirely different? I'd prefer something that'll save more energy than my dull Big Bang and polished Terminator. Something that'll push easier, and backend a decent amount, but not a hockey-stick. It'll be mostly sport patterns too. I don't know if my specs will help but:
250-320 rev rate (assuming), 14.5-15.5 mph at the pins (15.5 - 16.5 off hand?), and last time I checked I was 4 1/2 over and 1/2 up. very little tilt, decent rotation, mostly forward.

The bad batch much higher on durameter, I still have 3 of these two of them cannot even be cut with metal pads on a Haus machine. One of them is early and handles more oil, if you can spin it and change the surface it is the real version.

If it just spins with no surface changes forget about it and use it as it is for lighter oil. Plug is the only thing that will cut down on the two harder surfaced balls so redrilling is not an issue.

ricky,

I say again, I drilled it strong, my friend did also and neither of us are "weak-handed". Our balls did not even come close to handling medium oil. Medium-light, or as someone already commented, just above the Hornet.

yea i think the one that i can use in lighter oil is one with fewer or hardly any real particles in it to be honest. looking at them closely now i really almost can see the particles in the one that handles more oil. i dont know what to tell you. still a good ball either way!!!

Drilled it up today, put a sheen on it. Sucker skidded and made a small move. Must be a bad batch, but i'm okay with it. I've been looking for a dry ball that's controllable. Can't wait to pull it out when the lanes are drierr

Barry,

If you need to get rid of those KONG's let me know.
