Legends Polish (one way that seems to work)
« on: November 12, 2006, 11:54:20 PM »
(Yes, this might belong in "Coverstock Preparation" but since it's specific to Lm/L, I htought I'd put it here.)

I'm not sure how the rest of you use this polish, but I had not has much success applying it. The results were always inconsistent and splotchy.

My normal procedure for polish is to put some in a terry cloth towel (approx 12"x12", folded into quarters), rub it over the top of the ball, so it doesn't splash too much when I turn the spinner on, and then to turn the spinner on. For most polishes this works fine.

When I first started applying polishes, I used a damp sponge, put the polish in/on it and applied with the spinner. Not sure when I got away from that. A while back, I used this same procedure with Track's Magic Shine because I had had the same uneven, splotchy results.

I tried this damp sponge routine the other day with Legends polish and it went on fine and evenly and polished/buffed out well.

So if anyone else is having inconsistent results, try this variation, if you don't already use it.

I've always used this method on all polishes. I use a Meguires (sp?) automotive polishing spounge purchased in the automotive dept. at Wal-Mart.

I have found terry cloth to be too agressive with thinner polishes like Lanemasters particularly with high speed. Micro scratching is what you are experiencing.  Same as with car polishing.  When i used that method with a spinner, i always had to finish the job by hand to get a more even appearance.

It may be because I used the terry cloth dry, more than the terry cloth itself.

I'd wonder about "micro-scratching" since the Legends polish is not supposed to have any abrasive in it. However, any/every liquid has some particles or solids in them, no matter how soft or minute; so I suppose it's possible.

Jeff,

Do you let it dry first before putting it on the spinner?

no. Both it and Magic Shine seem to be quick drying; that may have been my original problem with both - not using it with a damp applicator. Magic Shine ALWAYS had some residue that needed stronger cleaner or another dose of polish to remove. (Somewhat like car polish left to dry in the sun; all car polish instructions say not to polish in the sun for just that reason, I'd guess.)

I let mine dry and don't seem to have as much of a problem.  I also use Doc's Elixir which does seem to shine up a ball slightly from what it was before you apply Elixir.  I take that into account.

I re-did a No Mercy to 4000 abralon sanded with Doc's on top put a bit more shine on it...love the finish/ball for a medium-heavier lane condition that has some length.

I put approx. a nickle size gob of polish on a damp spounge, turn the spinner on, and apply for approx. 20 seconds with moderate presure on each side while the spinner is running, then take a soft cotton or flannel cloth and polish lightly for approximately 10 seconds. I then check ball and if more shine is desired, I repeat with a dime size gob the second time if more shine is desired. I know this doesn't sound like much polish, but you would be surprised how far it will go and how much shine you will get doing it like this. Works for me. Can't speak for others.

And.....it seems to me that this Legends polish last a long time. I had to change the surface on my World Clas Reactive when I first got it. Sanded it, repolished it, have bowled approximately 70 games or more with it since that time and the shine still looks the same today and the ball reacts the same today as it did the day I redid it.

I use item number chi 8007 soft cloth light duty towels from a real office supply not office depot or officemax. They are a rayon/polyester blend that are tough but do not scratch a ball surface, i wet them put polish on them spread them out on the ball and works with anything i use whether cleaners or polish. You get 40 towels in pack and they are throw away if use want too, with cleaners they really deep clean a ball. You will be surprised what these towels will pull out because of there softness, i have never had one fall apart even after using them to polish 3-4 balls at time. They cost 5.79 a pack of 40 use them toss them out or keep them if they are still in good shape.
