Masterpiece question?
« on: September 18, 2006, 08:20:58 AM »

I'm looking to supliment my arsenal and am looking for a non pearl reactive ball which can be used dull or polished as needed, I bowl at 15mph-ish stroker style with good accuracy mainly on wood lanes med/ med-light oil backends are ok but not good. Would this ball fit my needs here and would a drill of pin over ring cg out work or would I need pin under to get the ball rolling earlier.I can't ask anyone in my centre as Legends are not widely popular over here ( U.K.) at the moment so knowledge of these balls is limited and opinions as to how good these balls are is divided.
Thanks

I am getting my Masterpeice redrilled today
I was told to drill it stacked leverage
that this ball likes that type of drill
with the pin & CG outside of holes.
I had it drilled label leverage but
it seems over & under.

MP is too strong for most medium to medium-light conditions ... for those conditions, I like the Absolute Power; BTW, this is a very general answer to a very general questions that doesn't provide a lot of info on the bowler.

Ive found my MP works best on long heavier patterns, seeing as how it has so much backend action. The Kong would probably work better for you on that, or the AP like Robb said.

He did say he was a stroker, implying less than average revs.
The MP should work for him, but there are no guarantees.

It also does react well to sanding, and adjusting the coverstock. I found it even stronger sanded to 2000 grit. So, I figure, under more normal circumstances, a mild hand scuffing with a green nylon pad would provide and earlier, smoother reaction.

One caution, IF what I have found, for me, applies to others as well:
placing the pin above the bridge area seems to weaken many Legends balls such that they handle 1/2 to a full degree less oil than they would handle with the pin at the level or the bridge or just below it. KEEP IN MIND that this is true for those whose "up" portion of their PAP (a PAP is specified by giving x"( mm) over by y" (mm) up) is less than 1". If your "up portion is 1", then putting the pin below the bridge will result in a relatively early hook. And a posiiton above the bridge (or ring finger) is more normal.

Ratpack,

One more note: a new Legends ball can be an expensive experiment, even more so on your side of "the pond". Any chance of getting a used one?

I ignored that since it makes no sense. Ball reaction is the important virtue you're (everyone) is looking for.

One never buys a ball; one buys a ball reaction.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I shall take it all in to consideration as my driller is in Spain on 2 weeks holiday at the moment so I'm not in a rush to choose.

charlest..very informative thanks, as you say all bowling balls are more expensive over here and a new drilled legends ball will about $300-$350, so a used one would be great but as they are not popular there are no balls available, also because balls are so expensive in general (i.e. the price I've shown applies to most high end balls) most people take great care when buying new balls and tend to keep them for a long time so there is not the same sort of trade in second hand stuff as you get, if you were to check on ebay.co.uk you will only find 20-30 balls at any one time and good high end balls are rare and would go for about the same as you guys pay for a new ball.

That sounds worse than I thought. Sooo, if you're not 110% convinced, I cannot in all honest even sugegst that you try it. Here, that experiment would run us $50.
