My First Day With My World Class
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:05:58 PM »
As I mentioned in another post today, I received my World Class Particle from allstarbowling-Joe today and I immediately took off for my pro shop to get it drilled.

First, I want to put the 14# won't work with Legends/Lanemaster balls rumor to rest as that is a myth. The L/LM 14# balls work and they "HIT" and hit hard believe me. First let me say that my initial scores weren't that great as I have been working on some changes in my mechanics and stuck with that approach today rather than bowl for score. Still I shot 789 for 4 games which was good for me compared to how I bowled this past season.

The ball has a 3" Pin and weighed 14-3 with 3 oz of top weight before drilling. Per Galen's instructions, I drilled it 3 1/2 x 3 with the Pin beside and at the bottom edge of the RF line. Weight hole towards thumb quardant on the VAL. Ball was drilled by Donnie Cassel at Heritage Lanes in Oklahoma City. Lanes were Brunswick Avlin Synthetic Lanes. They hadn't been oiled since yesterday afternoon. The oil was worn down to light in the heads with some carry down. Even with this, I was able to play one of my favorite lines of around the 12 board with the ball going out to the area of the 8 board and the ball unbelievably got cleanly thru the heads with a hard arc back to the pocket. I never dreamed it would get thru the heads in the condition they were in.

I was going to quit after 3 games and they started oiling the lanes, so I decided to stay & bowl one more game. I threw my first ball where I was throwing it on the drier lanes figuring it wouldn't get back to pocket and that I would have to move right some. To my amazement, the ball still made it back to the pocket. I never changed my line for that game. The only difference between that game and the 3 before they oiled is that on the fresh oil, I probably had a couple more feet of length and a sharper-harder arcing ball back to the pocket.

On both conditions, I had strikes on hits that I seldom if ever carry a strike on plus the strikes that were supposed to be strikes. I was amazed at some hits where it looked like the 10 pin was going to stand and some how the 6 pin would kick it out every time. My only problem with those 4 games is that I missed 12 spares or an average of 3 a game and I still almost averaged 200. I am just amazed at all of the strikes I was getting. Hope it wasn't beginners luck....lol

Can't wait to get back to the lanes and try this ball some more as well as try it in the wood lane house.

Brick,

First, congrats on getting what you were looking for. It's good that you dispelled that nasty rumor about 14 lb Legends balls having no core and no hitting power.

Also I'd like to remind you of a couple of factors.

One is that Anvillanes have tons of 'slick' built into them and not much oil is needed to get very good length from many balls. Most people almost need particle balls when virtually any amount of oil is used on AnvilLanes.

Two is that house shot oil patterns are blends which make it relatively easy to get to the pocket. This may be why you did not have to move at all and just got a different look. Once leagues begin and there are 10 different styles using the same lanes, transition may make getting to the pocket after the the first game very difficult. Be prepared.

Is it possible you for to try this ball in another house and give us a second report? My rev rate is not very high either, but my ball speed is probably higher than yours.

Jim,
 Happy to hear it !!!

BTW, I consider this another "L/L" success story and also how working with the "L/L guru", Galen Gentry, REALLY makes a difference !!!

NeverLearn, I will be trying it in a wood house I also bowl in probably sometime within the next week. I will try to try it during the day when the lanes are sometimes worn down and also on a Sunday morning when the lanes "usually" are freshly stripped and oiled.

If the ball doesn't fare as well in the wood house, I won't be disappointed as this ball wasn't chosen and drilled for the wood lane house. It's layout for my style and lane conditions was chosen by Galen for the synthetic house. He has selected the World Class Reactive and a layout for me for the wood house. I can't get the Reactive yet as according to Anne Marie Duggan whom has a pro shop in that wood lane house, they haven't made the 14# Reactives yet as of a week ago. Can't speak for today.

Brick,

Thanks!
That all seems to make a lot of sense: Particle for AnvilLanes and pearl reactive (of the WC's strength) for wood lanes.

Started playing with 2 of Charlest's favorites, an Absolute Power and a New Std. Threw the Absolute Power on Guardian and it seemed right to help overcome some 2nd game carrydown in medium oil. Haven't thrown the New Std yet, but plan to on SUnday or MOnday on an AnvilLanes set-up. I'll see how it compares to a Nemesisn and the Abs. Pwr to a Fire Quantum, all in 16 lbs.

One man that is on the same team as I in the Synthetic house alters between a New Standard and a  blue Hammer Hawg. He is what Sawbones would probably call, a flinger. His New Standard has a lot of length and when it makes it's move, that ball turns HARD. Almost flips. Never paid any attention to how he had it drilled. He also bowls in the same wood house I do, but on a different team and he can't use his new Standard too often in the wood house. I think his New Standard was drilled specifically to be used in the synthetic house.

I think the New Standard is not supposed to act that way; it's supposed to be a more arc-ing ball reation. I guess if he's a flinger, it can be forced to flip. The drill might help it do that. I drilled mine to help it get dpown the lane a little further and not burn up too quickly: pin on top of ring finger, CG below ring finger.

From my reading here on this forum, I got the idea that the New Std is one of the more flexible shells. If polished or fine sanded, say to 2000 grit, it could easily be used on wood lanes. However, I'm starting with the box finish.

He is a flinger for sure as he stands really close to the foul line, takes 3 steps and flings it waaaaay down the lane before it ever touches down. A good bowler and accurate too. 67 years old and carrys a bit over a 200 average.

Tried the World Class Particle on the Synthetic Lanes again around 3:30 this afternoon and the heads were similar to what they were yesterday before they stripped and oiled them, but there was a lot of carry down as there were kids throwing plastic balls all over the lanes today. The back-ends were much weaker than yesterday. The World Class was a little slow about finishing on the back-end because of the carrydown, so I moved out to the 6-7 board area and threw almost straight down the lanes and angled very slightly to between the 3 & 6 pin and the ball then finished strong. Bowled 3 games with it and shot 579. Bowled two more games with an Absolute Inferno that I received in a trade and had just gotten drilled today and then quit and loaded my equipment in the back of my Pick-up to go to the Wood Lanes at Blvd. Bowl to try the ball there.

Upon arriving at Blvd. Bowl, I pulled a muscle or something in my bowling shoulder lifting my equipment over the side of the bed in the back of my Pick-up. I proceeded to try to bowl anyhow with my shoulder bothering me really bad and the results were not good. Bowled 2 games with the World Class and only shot 172 & 170. It didn't carry nearly as well on the wood lanes as it did on the Synthetic Lanes at Heritage Lanes. Then again it was drilled for the Synthetic Lanes. Also, with my shoulder limiting me, I'm sure that had an effect as I could hardley get my ball out on the lanes at times. Chris Leftwich was there bowling 4 lanes over from me. Hope he didn't think that is how I throw all of the time as it isn't, but was today with my injured shoulder. Still, I will never challange him to a pot game.....lol

And yeah, Chris was tearing "H" out of the pins with his new Terminator. If I didn't misunderstand Chris, I understood him to say he bowled a 300 with his Terminator last night.

Jim,
Sorry to hear about the injury; take care of it and allow yourself some healing time, Sir.

BTW, I'm not surprised to hear about the WCs reactions to the wood lanes since it was drilled for synthetics; those lanes are softer and the particles in the WC are your too aggressive on that material ... I haven't bowled on wood lanes in years, but I'm sure that charlest and many a few other can make some recommendations reagrding surface and layouts. Also, Galen will be back next wednesday to consult about it.

Take care !!!

Wayne,
I'd check in with Galen mid week, after he gets back from the SoCal trade show, and chat with him a bit about you, your game and style, and "see" what he believes could compliment the big "T".
BTW, I got mine Terminator earlier this week ... and after 2 practice sessions with it, I LOVE it !!!
