Need a suggestion on a ball
« on: November 23, 2006, 03:02:14 AM »
I am looking to get another Lanemaster ball.  I have the Yeah Baby with a leverage drilling, but it still isn't doing it for me on heavy oil.  What Lanemaster ball should I be looking to for help on the heavy oil conditions?

I currently have the Yeah Baby cover prepped at 600 grit, but it slides just a little bit past where I need it to be.  I have already slowed myself down to the point where any slower would be uncomfortable.  I am also throwing around 18 mph.

Any help in choosing a heavy oil ball would be much appreciated.

The Big Bang and the World Class are their two strongest oil handling balls, in stock surfaces. They have other bigger hooking balls, but these two are the best oilers, currently.

If the YB is sliding for you with leverage, I'd suggest the WC, as it is earlier than the BB. I'd also suggest as low a pin as you can tolerate, PLUS kicking the CG out so you can use a weight hole if needed.

I concur with "Charlest" and his thread reply; I'd add in the Terminator to that list ... even polished it handles a surprising amount of oil, and you can always "knock" the shine off" too.

i'd go with a terminator.. the yeah baby used to be my favorite ball and would be my benchmark ball. and i lost it while i was moving from orlando to tucson. the terminator i believe has a very very similar core to that one of the yeah baby. if drilled right i believe this ball can handle almost any flood. also the right surface adjustment would help when the lanes start to break down. what i love about the terminator is that i'm able to miss my wrist position and the ball will still get down to the break point where it needs to be. and still recover from it if i miss-hit it and such. but at the same time i'm able to come around it more and it will hook more when i need it to if the break point is squirrly and need to go 'around the point.'

I have a world class and on heavy oil its great but when it starts to break down the ball tends to not read the break point very well.. so if the ball doesn't come back i'll move a board right and it'll go through the nose, then i'm lost for  a couple frames until i find the right place to throw it to get to that break point i need.

"Dav",
With your referenced speed of around 18 mph, unless you're a "cranker" with a lot of revs to match that high ball speed, I'd recommend a few things:

- layouts with pins below your ring finger (gets the ball to rev up earlier)

- adjust the cover to "read" the lane earlier; play around with different combinations of lower grits, with and without polish, until you get the reaction that you're looking for ... the coverstocks on these balls are very durable and take to adjustments very well

- consult with people that are knowledeable about "L/LM" equipment; Galen Gentry at Legends is our "guru", and Pat or Anne Marie Duggan at BowlingBallMall.com are very good too. Anee Marie is in Legends Staff, runs the BBM pro shop and her husband, Pat, was a pro shop owner and driller for years too.

- "Listen" to the recommendations of BR roomie "Charlest"; Jeff has a wealth of knowledge and experience and makes some very good recommendations for us on a regular basis.

If you need contact info, PM me back OR do a search in the Legends/Lane Masters Forum for those names ... I've posted their contact info countless times to date and Charlest is a regular poster of threads throughout this web site in various forums.

GOOD LUCK ... and bowl well !!!

No problem-o, "Dav"; BTW, if you're interested in trying out an "L/LM" ball for medium heavy oil, I have a used New Standard FS (link below):

Good luck ... and bowl well !!! "We" look forward to welcoming you to the "Legion" !!!
