i just bowled for the first time with my black pearl and it is a really nice piece i must say. (was just working on timing and shot 653) but i was hoping for it to cover the heavier stuff. (had to play a down and in shot... im good at it but not what i expected)

so before i even had it drilled i tried to hit it with maroon and light grey scotchbrite with plenty of water but it didnt even remove the polish! ?? ?? ? !

how can i dull the surface with what i have:

valentinos 320, 500, 2000, 4000 pads
maroon and lt. grey scotchbrite.

I was really hoping to get it to lt. grey scotchbrite as i like that surface.

OR

should i leave it polished and just use the buzz on heavy stuff as right now they work amazing the way they are. just the opposite of how i planned. LMAO!

PLUS i had the buzz drilled pin up 5" to pap and the black pearl 4" pin to pap pin down and a weight hole down on the val to separate the flare rings

C'mon now. You are joking, right. They're hard but they're not THAT hard. I knocked the polish off mine and took it to 1500 grit dull a few years back.

YOu might not change the particles but you will definitely change the resin in which they're embedded with nylon pads and Valentino's pads. They use SIlicon Carbide.

Honestly, with a spinner or elbow grease, either of those have worked for me.

Are they new? Heck, even older, used ones have changed the surafce of the diamond particle balls like the NS and the Big Kahuna.

Unless they have changed the composition of the Black Pearl since I had mine, something's wrong somewhere. Honestly.

Of course you can leave them the way they are now, but even the Scotch Brite pads should annihilate the Lanemaster's Factory Finish polish.

As a last ditch effort, you can try the strongest stuff short of Lanemasters own $99 diamond pads - Trizact. Trizact are $3 - $4 per pad.

thats what i was thinking.... maybe ill just really press down with some maroon.

my pro shop guy was like your gonna need to take that polish off. and i said i already tried LOL!

NEVERMIND!!!!

wow do I feel like a fool.

I was just hitting the black pearl really hard with maroon and i noticed it was sanding the resin of the ball with no problem. so I was confused why didnt it take the polish off... that seems impossible! so I reach down to clean the ball after I sand each side and i realized my foolish mistake!

I grabbed a cloth last time that had storms step #2 on it!!! hahaha I had repolished the ball!

now I have the black pearl at 800 grit grey pad

and the buzz I polished with valentinos over the 800 grit grey pad. then very lightly went over it with the grey pad to give it a sheen finish. if it hooks too early still ill just polish it up again.

Don't worry. We've all been there and done that.

Once I tried to use the back of a used Abralon pad as a cloth for apply polish (the opposite of what you were trying to do). I didn't look close enough and put the polish on the worn abrasive side and was applying polish with the equivalent of sandpaper, fine sandpaper, but still sandpaper. It was an odd surface, to say the least.

Glad you got it straightened out.

haha yup yup. i actually tried something like that on purpose when i was fooling around. needless to say it didnt work. lol

I have a Black Pearl and Black Pearl Reactive and love both balls but you might want to consider another line of equipment for really soupy lanes. I keep the BPR at a moderate shine and the Black Pearl at either the grey or burgandy scotch bright. For most conditions that I bowl on that is plenty but on heavier oil I think you'd be crazy to not consider a 900G Bounty or the AMF Mega Friction.

Welcome to the forum, Skippy. Bout time you show up.

Icewall, from experience I'd stay away from using Abralon on the Black Pearl. I destroyed a few pads before going to scotch brite.

To remove the polish, use a spinner and the maroon pad w/applying water. It will take some pressure and time...the cover is HARD. Once down to Maroon, you can hit it w/lt grey.

I also agree w/Skip. While I shot my only 300 w/my Black Pearl, it's in my closet these days. Too condition specific for me and just doesnt hook like the reactive stuff on the market. I guess if I bowled on some wood I would probably try the Legends stuff again but personally my scores have soared since going to more agressive covers.

Im agreeing with whats been said. I tried the black pearl at lt. grey pad and it barely even made a difference at all. if anything all it did was get the same distance with a more controlled move off the break.

Ive decided to take my buzz to lt grey pad as that ball becomes an absolute beast when sanded. grips through the oil like its not even there. even with it drilled pin up 5" from my pap I was able to throw strikes straight up 3rd arrow on a heavy oil THS.

if i polished the buzz it becomes a completely different ball. so much backend that I actually FEARED the dry! if it even sniffed the dry outside it very well could pass brook!

the buzz is one special ball thats for sure.

Yeah...I tried a Buzz pin over bridge, with CG kicked out to the right. Est a 5.5 x 3 layout and with polish the ball moved a ton when it sniffed some dry.

Maybe keep your Black Pearl shined and use it for the lighter condition. Sure, its bassackwards...but if it works, go for it.

I still have my BP and a Hornet, keeping them in case I ever bowl on wood.
