Need LM ball recommendation
« on: March 07, 2008, 11:14:45 AM »
I am experiencing difficulty matching up (early hook and no carry) late in  tournament blocks when the mid land goes and some carry down occurs (I am seeing this mostly on older synthetic lanes). I am looking for what LM ball would be the best fit to help me have a chance on this type of shot.

I have also been looking at an Visionary SS Ogre and Roto-Grip Neptune, but haven't had the greatest experience with balls from those companies, which is why the need for LM ball recommendation. I also currently have a Big Bang and really like the reaction. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Please see profile for current arsenal and my specs.

In your profile, you list a Thing Returns and a CrunchTime, both of which should work in that type of situation. But what you gave was just a general description. If you could describe how these two balls DO NOT allow you to handle the drier conditions of late blocks, maybe more help could be offered.

Jeff and I had this conversation yesterday about an RG Venus which I kind of figure would be the ball you are seeking StraightBall.  I find myself looking for a ball that works on the conditions you mention "I am experiencing difficulty matching up (early hook and no carry) late in tournament blocks when the mid land goes and some carry down occurs (I am seeing this mostly on older synthetic lanes)."  Just another thought.

The Crunch Time (5" pin) is drilled with the pin above and in the middle of the fingers. The Thing Returns has a leverage drilling with the pin to the right and slightly above the fingers. Both balls were wet sanded to 2000 and polished.

The Crunch time has been a great ball for me, but on this shot if I do move deeper on the lane(inside 20 at arrows) in order to catch the remaining oil, the minute the ball hits or crosses the track area it will immediately start to rev up and hook. It will either cross over or if I do get it far enough right, it will burn up early and not finish strong enough to carry. The Thing Return is even worse for me on this shot.

My pro shop guy has recommended an SS Ogre or Neptune with a skip flip drilling for this shot. I would normal go with him on this (after much arguing), but as I said I have not had much luck with balls from these companies. I hope I gave you enough to go on, if not I will try again. If it would help I can try to post a video.

Thanks Scott, The RG Vensus is another good ball. I will add it to the list of balls to consider.

I think if Rob was here...he would suggest the Buzz....I had one, and it only worked when the shot got all messy for me.

I'm not quite sure if you are looking for a lite-oil ball but in my experience bowling the PBA-Experience league I have found that the lanes dry up in a big way and so I got a "Lane/Masters Hornet" ball and it is about the best thing that I have got to be included in my arsenal as it wrecks havoc on lite-oil to no oil conditions...just my $00.02

The Buzz is NOT the ball; it is stronger than the Thing Returns and the Crunchtime.

StraightBall,

From your description of the CT and the TR (good drilling and ball reaction description, BTW) -
I think your driller is on the right track. The Ogre Ss may have too much back end and a weak drilled Neptune is really weak. I'd say it was as toss up between the Neptune and the Venus.

The Venus would fit just below the CT (have the Venus; had 3 CTs; have the Buzz).

Maybe even better is the Hornet, which fits beautifully between the Neptune and the Venus (for me anyway). My only qualms about it is it's not an inexpensive experiment. The Venus and Neptune are less expensive by about $40 or more on the Internet; not sure in a pro shop.

This being case, and IF you're thinking a new ball, I'd go with the Venus. It gives you lots of drilling AND surface preparation options. Given your CT drill, I'd suggest something similar: pin over center of bridge and CG kicked out an 1" towards the PAP/VAL. The cover is easily adaptable to rougher or finer + polish. Mine's at 3000 grit right now - earlier lane read than stock 1500 grit polished..

If you really feel like trying one, the Hornet is a  great ball also; it and the Venus have great punch and pin moving power. For the Hornet, I'd suggest pin over ring finger and CG stacked below. (I see your profile and your specs are not far from mine. I drilled mine: pin in ring finger and CG kicked 1/2 negative of grip center - too strong a drilling. Wish I drilled it like I'm suggesting you drill yours.

Good luck, whatever you choose.

Thanks, that's just the kind of help I was looking for! The Venus sounds like a great option, but I think I will go with the Hornet. Even though it costs more I really like the LM products.

FWIW....and I had a Hornet.  Hornet will not do very well on carry down where I think the Venus might do a little better as it's light load particle pearl.  SS Ogre also hates even slight carry down....I also have the SS.

That's why I am going to opt for the Venus. That's is why Jeff and I had the conversation earlier.
