Matt,
A shorter span will allow you to get more revs off of your hand and the slightly tighter thumbhole will stopp you from "gripping" the ball, which will aid in maintaining a free armswing.
Pulling the ball is "NORMALLY" a speed issue (for me too); if you start with a definitive pushaway that is in time with your first step (2nd if you 5 step), release the ball into the aforementioned free armswing, roll (not throw) the ball, and follow through to your breakpoint/to a distant focal point, those "pulls" may lessen in frequency.
