First off... I know "talk to Galen" That is on my list.
You all have a ton of knowledge, so I will ask you all first.
My father throws a beautiful down and in ball. He is the most consistent bowler I have ever watched that wasn't on television. Not just saying that because he is my father either. The problem is his ball is older than me(maybe). It is an old Star something or other. It is urethane and I think due to this and the core of his ball that his carry is just horible. Smash the pocket the whole night and stone sevens and tens. His ball will not allow him to move in and get any more entry angle, will just hit light then. He has a ton of hand and probably could play anywhere on the lane with the right ball.
So here is the question, what would be the best ball for him to get as an upgrade. I think he should get something that is not an aggresively hooking ball(too much shock to the system), maybe low particle load. He doesn't know much about the balls on the market now, but I'm not even sure where to suggest he start.

If he is used to urethane then get him something that is smooth but stronger than what he has now. I would go with a med line solid because they are very controllable and still offer alot more pop than urethane. my number one pick would be a V2 sanded, after that maybe a BVP wizard or Fire Diablo (dark thunder solid is good to but may be to strong). The other option would be a mild pearl partical like the BVP ambush, the Pyro may be to angular the Hawg is to strong, and the Big time pearl is way to angular.

Myser,
Those are not bad ideas, but I think if his dad is using plain urethane right now, those balls are just going to hook too darn much for him.
I wonder if a Blue Green Centaur from Visionary would hook enough. It has a very urethane-like movement and ball reaction, but needs a good deal of dry.
ANother possible choice is Hammer's Burgundy Pure Hammer. It is also a weak or dry lanes ball, but very urethane-like in its ball path.
A bit stronger is the Legends Kong; it's a solid particle that works very well on medium-light oil and is very arc-like.
ANother good choice is the AMF Orbit EXtreme. It has a mild core and polsihed Super-FLex cover. It is a light oil ball, with a very arc-like ball reaciton.
justink,
I think your father probably needs a weak resin solid if he wants to continue to play and outside line.

Thank you for your quick replies. I hadn't even thought about the med or lower lines. I kept on looking at the top and thinking, crap these are going to be way too strong. The only ball that surprised me from your posts is the Kong. I've only seen my friend's Kong and it looks REAL strong, but would have the right motion. I recently got the Big Bang and my dad bowls in a league with me and really likes the ways it hooks for me. As do I, not sure about the surface, yet. But I know that would just get aggrevating for him and he would not use it. So I'll do some more research in the mid and lower lines.
Any more suggestions are certainly welcome

also take a look at what visionary has to offer the Violet gargoyle might be what the doctor ordered it is a great down and in ball and can be drilled to arc.

I know you said mid to low, but what about the Big R Bang? It's supposed to be a medium oil ball. I havn't read much on it, though. Just a thought.

AFAIHL, it's for medium-light to medium oil, it's a highly polished solid resin, and it's as flippy and big hooking a ball as there is, under normal circumstances and under normal drills. Based on what you have said, it's one of the last balls I would hazard to recommend. If you wanted a resin pearl for medium light to medium oil, I would recommend the Absolute Power. It is much more of a control ball, especially for a down and in player.

Would a Venus be too much ball? I have not rolled one but the spec's say it would be a good ball for him
-
I like the idea of the Venus. Looks like a good ball to make a step to from urethane. Should carry better than his rock. The idea here is a Christmas gift, so I am also trying to decide if just a gift certificate to the proshop I work with would be a good way to go. Or buy the ball I choose and give it to him. My worry with him going to the proshop and picking one out is time and he doesn't know a thing about the current balls on the market, scared he'll go too aggressive.

I would recamend a fairly high grit solid ball. Something like the Blue Green Centaur like Charlest said or mabye one of the Vendetta balls that is solid, although they may have to much core. The Vendetta 44 does hook quite a bit but it very easy to control. Something else you may look at is the Jolt from Storm. Seems to have good numbers and a fairly tame cover.

Seriously what I originally wanted to do is give him my Dynothane Vendetta Solid. Just have it plugged and steal his ball to get the measurements. Have it drilled and just give that to him.

Giving him the solid may be a good idea. Him throwing that ball could be a way for him to get a taist and point of reference of the newer bowling balls. Then you could give him the gift card to the shop like you were talking about and he could pic a ball based on his experances with the V solid. That may be a little more than you want to spend though but just a thought.

Good advice, I like it. Your recommendations are perfect and just what I was looking for. Thank you all.

i havent thrown one but a straight flush is suppost to be a low oil ball... but i have a new standard and i know it says its suppost to hook alot but i have mine drilled full leverage and can play with the same hand position just change my ball speed some a inside shot to an outside shot with it and it hits like a mack truck from almost any angle

legends/lane masters.....what more do you need?

Well... I gave him the Dynothane Vendetta Solid, had it plugged and he got it drilled before league last night. Holy crap, he makes that thing hook. It's a good ten boards stronger than when I threw it. Just beautiful. This has got to be the best starting point for him I could have found, especially for the price. If I would have gone the direction I originally had wanted to with a highend ball, it would never make it to the pocket or he'd standing way left and swinging it. Which he almost has to do with the Solid. It'll just take some getting used to, but his carry is better already, absolutely no weak fives due to lack of drive. Thank you all for the help, I appreciate it allot.
