What to choose WC.. NS.. MP..??
« on: July 11, 2006, 12:53:04 AM »
I need help plugging in an empty space in my arsenal.. Any insight would be appreciated.. I guess I would want to replace the Red Alert or put something that can handle heavier load of oil and something between my NS and the Hot Rod... I prefer something more controllable where it is less flippy and more of an smooth arc.

Also, I have to mention that I have two different forms in which i can bowl with. I can go from High Rev and a little about average ball speed ---- to Medium rev and average ball speed.

Medium-Oily - Zone Red Alert
Medium - New Standard
Dry-Medium - Hot Rod Hybrid

I have one last question regarding the reaction of the ball. Would a ball that has more of a flippy reaction give out more of a pin reaction than one with a smooth arc?

You need to furnish some information about yourself such as but not limited to:

Type bowler.....such as Cranker, Tweener, Stroker?

Which part of the lanes that you are most comfortable playing at?

Speed?

Revs?

etc........

I see 2 choices that stand out immediately: the Absolute Power and the Kong.

The King seems, to me and a few others, to be a special case. It is on the weak side for a solid particle in the 800 grit range, out of the box. I and a few others, found it GREAT for medium-light oil: even and predictable is the way I'd phrase. It does not hook nearly as much as Legends charts indicate nor does it "APPEAR" to handle as much oil as indicated.

The other is the Absolute Power. Another very even reacting ball. I put it just below my NS, personally, when drilled the same. It should be in the neighborhood you want/need, handling more oil than the HR Hybrid and hooking more also. a Lot depends on the drill, and you di dnot indicate how any of these balls are drilled.

I did not ask how you throw the ball or what you PAP is or your delivery specs, because you already indicated which ball you used for which type of oil pattern AND amount.

There are several other Lm/L balls that also might be appropriate for you, but I think they might depend, to a larger degree than the two I mentioned, upon the drilling you will use for them.

As mentioned I can bowl two different styles, from a Cranker to Tweener. I used to bowl as a Cranker but I've found out that during patchy and/or dry lanes I get into trouble alot. So, I've been working on a new form and trying to get used to be a Tweener.

The lanes I'm most comfortable with and play with most of the time are Synthetic lanes. lanes are pretty new about 2 years since they remodeled and the oil pattern is i guess from gutter to gutter and the back i believe is oiled down as well but not as much so it won't react that much.

Charlest-
As for Speed, Rev, PAP, and Layout of my balls I'm not quite sure.. Not sure how to measure that. When I get a chance i'll take a picture of the layouts of my ball and hope someone can tell me the specs if possible. I can assume that my axis rotation is anywhere from 30-59 degrees, if that helps in any way.

Would the Big kahuna and MP fit between the NS and HR Hybrid??

Those factors affect how a ball is drilled and how appropriate it is for you on certain oil patterns & oil amounts.

When you have a lot more ball speed than you have revs, you need a ball that grabs the lane earlier via either more surface or low RG or high RG differenial (which usually translates into more flare) or stronger drillings ( less than 4" pin to PAP distances) or combinations of all of some of these.

When you have more revs than ball speed, you need less surface (possibly polish) or a higher RG or a lower RG differential or milder drillings (greater than 4" pin to PAP distance), or combinations of some or all these factors.

Yes, they would, with the BK being slightly stronger and earlier due to the particle content. The MP is a pearl resin, if you like them, of unusual strength, compared to many pearl resins. (The MP is stronger than the Absolute Power by a 1/2 to a full degree of oil handling and overall hooking ability.)

Man Charlest is like my new best friend.. thanks for the insight on that.

One more quickie... if the pin is about the finger it makes the ball more snappy..?? and if it's below more of a conrolled arc..?? Is that correct..??

I was thinking of gettina  WC for floods also would that be a good choice..??

1. BUT ONLY, and this is a very BIG "but only" copared to the same ball, thrown by the sam eperson on the same oil pattern + lane surface!

2. "snappy"? some people call it that. In reality, the ball with the pin above the ring finger or bridge area goes thru the transition of skid to hook more quickly and suddenly than the same ball with the pin below that area. This sudden transition makes the ball harder to control and requires a very consistent ball speed from one release to the next to take advantage of this.

There are oil patterns that like this and there are ones that prefer the lower pin. You have to know when to use which one!

I do not know. While the World Class should[/b[ handle more oil than a stock Red Alert, hooking earlier, I cannot say for certain if you will be able to handle true "floods" with it. The cover is easily adjustable. A full sanding to 800 or even 600 will allow you to handle more oil than its stock out-of-the-box surface. And a strong drill like a 3 .5 - 4" pin under the level of the bridge area and the CG at a 60 or 45 degree position, should allow an average "handed" person who does NOT have high ball speed to handle a good amount of oil. Everything is relative.

(FYI when I say under or above the "level of the bridge area", I don't mean exactly over the center of it. The pin could be to the right side of the ring finger (for a right handed person) or even to the left of the middle finger and still be said to be above or below  the bridge area.)
